Adelphi Rallies Late to Upset No. 23 Bentley, 59-57

WALTHAM, Mass. – Two free throws by graduate guard Ty'zhea Hawkins (Brentwood, N.Y.) with 3.7 seconds to play put Adelphi University back in front and lifted the Panthers to a 59-57 upset of Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball Saturday afternoon at the Dana Center.

Bentley, number 23 in this week's D2SIDA media poll, slipped to 6-3 overall with its first loss in five NE10 contests. Adelphi (4-4, 3-3 NE1-) returned to .500, both overall and in conference action.

The game featured the 1,000th career point as a collegian for Bentley graduate guard Kari Brekke (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North HS) and followed the unveiling of a banner commemorating retired coach Barbara Stevens' 2021 induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Hawkins' go-ahead free throws produced the 13th lead change of the afternoon and the fourth of the final stanza. After a Bentley turnover, Hawkins got to the line once again and made one of two with two-tenths of a second left to lock up the victory.

Down 48-47 entering the fourth, Bentley opened a 53-48 lead four minutes with three straight baskets from senior guard Ella Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Cedar Grove HS). There was a lay-up for the lead, an elbow jumper and a 17-footer.

It would be more than five minutes until Bentley scored from the field again, on a go-ahead driving layup by Thompson with 28.4 seconds that made it a 57-56 Falcon advantage. During that dry spell, the Falcons were outscored 8-2 with both points coming from the foul stripe.

Bentley's biggest lead of the game came at the 8:11 mark of the third, 38-32 on the second of Brekke's three triples. Her first, from the left corner, came with 7:10 left in the second and gave her 1,000 points for her career, which began with a year at the University of New Hampshire. It also launched a 9-0 run that turned a five-point Falcon deficit into a four-point lead.

It was a tough shooting game for Bentley, which finished at .386 overall, only four of 16 on three-pointers and nine of 13 at the line. Meanwhile, Adelphi shot .424 overall, including .529 in the third, and outscored the Falcons 17-5 on points off turnovers.

Bentley had the rebound advantage, 38-32, but turned it over 16 times, six more than the Panthers.

Junior Maggie Whitmore (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) led Bentley with 15 points (all in the first half), nine rebounds and five assists. Thompson matched Brekke's 11 points and sophomore guard Amanda Kabantu (Portland, Maine/Portland HS) added eight points, along with five assists.

For Adelphi, senior forward Jenna Jordan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) scored 20 points and Hawkins followed with 17.

Next Saturday, Bentley will be in Philadelphia to take on Holy Family University.
