Brekke Breaks 3-Point Accuracy Record as Bentley Takes Care of Business, 80-61 over New Haven

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior guard Kari Brekke (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North HS) broke the school record for three-point accuracy in a game and finished with 20 points, no missed shots and no turnovers as Bentley University shot past the University of New Haven, 80-61, in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball Monday night at the Dana Center.

With the victory, coupled with Southern New Hampshire's win at Le Moyne, the Falcons remained even with SNHU at the top of the conference's Northeast Division, each at 12-4. Overall, Bentley improved to 14-6 and New Haven dropped to 8-14, including 3-13 NE10.

Brekke took and made five three-pointers, surpassing the school record of 4-for-4 achieved ten times previously. Overall, she was on target for all seven of her shots, made her only free throw and led the team with four assists.

Brekke's shooting played a key role as Bentley shot .525 overall from the field and .522 from three-point land, making 12 of 23 from deep.

Five of those three-pointers came in the opening stanza when the Falcons shot out to a 25-18 lead. Brekke gave Bentley a lead it would never relinquish when she hit her second triple of the game with 6:23 left in the quarter. That ignited a 10-0 run that made it 18-9 and also included a second-chance basket from sophomore guard Maggie Whitford (South Portland, Maine/ South Portland HS), a three from junior guard Ella Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) and a spinning lay-up from freshman guard Kylie Ducharme (Wilmington/Wilmington HS).

The second quarter, which ended with coach C White's team up 48-33, featured a pair of 8-0 runs. The first included threes launched by Brekke and Ducharme, with a Ducharme lay-up in between. Brekke launched the second by hitting from deep and Whitmore scored the next five, including one from distance.

Graduate forward Autumn Ceppi (Bedford/Dana Hall School) scored eight points in the third, and Thompson had a five-point fourth quarter, including a three that gave Bentley its biggest lead of the night, 74-52 with 7:40 to play.

Three teammates joined Brekke in double-figures and Ducharme nearly did as well, finishing with nine. Thompson scored 16 and was four-of-six from outside the arc, Ceppi was next with 15, and Whitmore followed with 13, along with six boards. Ceppi added five rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block with the Falcons a plus-25 when she was on the court.

New Haven, which shot  .456 overall and made 8 of 18 treys, was led by senior guard Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla.), with 12 points.

Bentley outrebounded the visitors, 32-29, and committed four less turnovers. The Falcons capitalized on the Charger miscues, scoring 30 points off turns.

Bentley will play its fourth game in seven days Wednesday night when the Falcons are in Worcester to take on Assumption (5:30 pm).
