Brekke & Ceppi Shoot Lights Out as Bentley Gives White First Win

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior guard Kari Brekke (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North HS) scored 24 points without missing a shot and Bucknell transfer Autumn Ceppi (Bedford/Dana Hall) made eight of nine shots for 16 points as Bentley University shot down Carlow University, 99-31, in non-conference women's basketball Friday night on Barbara Stevens Court.

The combined 17 of 18 shooting from the duo gave Bentley a school record .689 field goal percentage and C White a victory in her long-awaited debut as the Falcons' head coach. She succeeded Hall of Famer Barbara Stevens in July 2020 but had her inaugural season cancelled due to the pandemic.

Bentley took control of the game early with a run of 20 unanswered, over a span of five-and-a-half minutes giving the Falcons a 23-5 lead with 2:45 left in the opening quarter. The advantage grew to 23, 34-11, at the quarter break with Brekke having five three-pointers and 17 points.

That 20-0 run included a pair of three-balls from both Brekke and senior guard Hartlee Meier (Southington, Conn./Marianapolis Prep).

The Falcons opened the second quarter with 13 straight points, extending the lead to 34 at 47-13. Seven of those were scored by sophomore guard Maggie Whitmore (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS), who was playing her first official game as a collegian.

The score stood at 54-19 at the half and 78-29 after three before the Falcons scored the final 21 points of the night for the final 68-point spread.

Brekke finished 9 of 9 overall from the floor and buried all six of her three-point attempts, breaking the Bentley single game record for accuracy. She also had four rebounds and three assists in 23 turnover-free minutes.

Ceppi, a graduate center, filled the stat sheet with four rebounds, four helpers, three rejections and a pair of steals. Also scoring in doubles were Meier, with a career-best 12, and freshman Amanda Kabantu (Portland, Maine/Portland HS), with ten. Kabantu, five-of-eight from the floor, added ten rebounds for her first career double-double.

Bentley's .689 field goal percentage broke the school record of .659, set against Bryant in 2002 and matched against Stonehill five years later. The Falcons were also 14 of 23 from downtown and finished with a 43-21 rebound advantage. They also had 35 assists, 11 steals, 21 second chance points and 52 points in the paint.

Carlow, whose top score had six points, shot 22 percent overall and made 5 of 17 three-pointers.

The Falcons will open their Northeast-10 schedule and a stretch of four straight away from home Wednesday at Saint Anselm College.
