Bentley Women’s Basketball Closes Out Successful Decade Saturday vs. SNHU

WALTHAM, Mass. – Following a decade that has featured the 2014 NCAA Division II national championship, Barbara Stevens' 1000th career win, nine NCAA tournaments, four NCAA regional titles, seven Northeast-10 regular season championships, six NE10 tournament crowns and 267 victories, the Bentley University women's basketball team will play its final game of 2019 Saturday afternoon at the Dana Center.

The Southern New Hampshire University Penmen will provide the opposition for the 1:30 pm contest, which can be seen live on the NE10 NOW digital network and online at www.ne10now.tv.

Both teams will enter the final NE10 contest of the calendar year at 8-3 overall and riding a four-game winning streak. Bentley has won its first three conference games and SNHU is off to a 1-2 start with losses to Assumption and Saint Anselm.

During its current win streak, Bentley has outscored the opposition by an average of 17.8 points while shooting 47 percent from the field and posting a +11.8 rebound margin. Southern New Hampshire's average winning margin during its stretch has been seven.

Topping the scoring list for the Falcons are senior center Monica Viapiano (Holden/Holy Name HS) and sophomore guard Kari Brekke (Appleton, Wisc./Appleton North HS).

Viapiano is up to 14.7 points per game with her .577 field goal percentage second best in the conference. She's scored in doubles in every game this season and has averaged 16.7 PPG over the last six games.

Brekke provides 13.1 points per game after putting up 21, 20 and 16 in the Falcons' last three contests. During that stretch, the 2019 America East Rookie of the Year has knocked down 11 of 21 three-pointers and also averaged 5.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.7 steals.

Stevens has five other players who produce between five and 9.2 points a game, with the list headed by junior guard Katie Meriggioli (Waunakee, Wisc./Edgewood HS). She's coming off her first double-double of the season, 10 points and 12 rebounds in a 74-52 win over Holy Family.

Graduate forward Megan Lewis (Sevenoaks, England) has scored in doubles in three of the last four games, and sophomore guard Kolleen Bouchard (Houlton, Maine/Houlton HS) has made nine of 12 shots in the last two games while averaging 10 points off the bench.

Southern New Hampshire, the NE10's third highest scoring team at 72.8, has three players who score at least 11 a game, including junior guard Gyanna Russell, who had 30 points during a one-point loss to Saint Anselm last month. She averages 13.3 points overall but has seen her production drop to 7.8 PPG over the last four.

Also in doubles for the Penmen are seniors Molly Terry and Victoria Dean, at 11.5 and 11.0 respectively. They are the team's top three-point threats with Terry having buried 26 and Dean 20.

During the current streak, SNHU has limited its opponents to a .392 field goal percentage and collected 37 more rebounds, including a 51-37 margin against Goldey-Beacom last Saturday in a five-point win.

Bentley swept the series last year, prevailing 70-65 and 72-66, after SNHU did the same to the Falcons the year before. Saturday's matchup will be the 50th all-time before the two programs with Bentley owning a 43-6 advantage.

Bentley's first game of 2020 will be two weeks from Saturday, Jan. 4 at home against nationally-ranked Saint Anselm.
