Franklin Pierce the Next Destination for Bentley’s Traveling Falcons

WALTHAM, Mass. – Following trips to Philadelphia, Florida, New York and Worcester already this season, the Bentley University women's basketball team will once again be on the road Saturday, this time for a 1:30 pm game at Franklin Pierce University. The game from the FPU Field House can be seen on your smart TV at NE10 NOW or online at NE10NOW.tv.

By the end of tomorrow's game, eight of Bentley's first ten games will have been played away from the Dana Center. The schedule will begin to balance out with three straight home games, beginning Nov. 15 against Holy Family, and the next trip not until after the holidays.

Bentley will go into Saturday's contest at 6-3 overall after winning four of its last five, as well as 2-0 Northeast-10. Three of the last four opponents have been limited to 53 points or less and a field goal percentage under .330.

In the last two, Bentley has limited St. Thomas Aquinas (7-0 at the time) to 51 points, about 34 below the Spartans' season norm, and Assumption to 47 in a 17-point win.  Those two clubs shot only .327 and .305, respectively.

At Assumption, sophomore guard Kari Brekke (Appleton, Wisc./Appleton North HS) accounted for nearly a third of the Falcon scoring with 21 points on 9-of-16 shooting and a trio of three-pointers. She's second on the team in scoring, averaging a dozen a game with a team-best 15 treys to her credit.

Senior center Monica Viapiano (Holden/Holy Name HS), who came within a rebound of a double-double at Assumption, tops the scoring list at 14 a game and is also Bentley's leader in rebounding (6.9) and field goal percentage (.567).

Senior forward Maddy Springfield (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant HS), who averages 7.3 points, is tied for the NE10 lead in three-point accuracy at an even .500 (13-26). She's also had a steal in five consecutive games.

Junior guard Katie Meriggioli (Waunakee, Wisc./Edgewood HS) provides just under ten points a game and is also the Falcons' number two rebounder at 6.1. Freshman guard Ella Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) has averaged 9.6 points since moving into the starting unit five games ago.

Franklin Pierce has dropped its last three games, all to conference opponents, and is currently 3-4 overall under the leadership of Mark Swasey. He returned to the helm this summer after previously coaching the Ravens from 2002-09, a tenure than included a berth in the NCAA Division II national championship game in his final year.

This year's squad features junior guard Sophia Holmes and six-two sophomore Izzy Lipinski, with the duo accounting for just about have of the Ravens' 59.7 per game scoring average.

Holmes has drained 19 three-pointers and is averaging 16.6 points and 5.1 rebounds. Lipinski, after scoring a career-high 27 in a 69-59 loss to Stonehill, follows at 13.4 points and six boards a game.

Bentley has swept the season series from the Ravens the last three years and is 17-3 in the last 20 meetings. Last year, the Falcons won by 24 on the road, 80-56, and in a nail-biter at home, 57-55.
