Brekke Scores 21, Leading Bentley to 64-47 Win over Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore guard Kari Brekke (Appleton, Wisc./Appleton North HS) scored 21 points, including 10 in the third quarter, to lead Bentley University to a 64-47 win over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball Wednesday evening at the Laska Gym.

Bentley boosted its conference record to 2-0 and moved to 6-3 overall after limiting the Greyhounds to 30.5 percent shooting. Assumption, which was within two early in the third quarter slipped to 4-4 overall and 2-2 NE10.

The Falcons, after trailing by six early, blanked the home team over the final five minutes of the opening quarter to take a 16-15 into the first break. The 7-0 spurt began with a three-ball from freshman guard Ella Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) and also included a lay-up from sophomore guard Kolleen Bouchard (Houlton, Maine/Houlton HS) and a go-ahead lay-up from junior forward Marissa Fontaine (Franklin/Bishop Feehan HS).

Bentley also finished the second quarter strong with a 10-4 spurt making it a 32-27 halftime lead for the Falcons. Junior guard Katie Meriggioli (Waunakee, Wisc./Edgewood HS) ignited the run with a three-pointer and it also included two jumpers from Brekke, last year's America East Player of the Year while playing at New Hampshire, and a Fontaine triple.

With the Falcon lead standing at two a couple minutes into the third, Brekke scored the next seven points, with two jumpers and a three, to make it 41-32 with six minutes to play. That 7-0 run grew to 21-10 and Bentley carried a 13-point lead into the fourth, 55-42.

Fontaine opened the fourth quarter scoring with a three and senior center Monica Viapiano (Holden/Holy Name HS) followed with a lay-up, assisted by Fontaine, making it an 18-point game, 60-42, with eight minutes to play. The Falcon advantage peaked at 20, 64-44, on an another Viapiano lay-up, this one with 5:40 to play.

Brekke scored her 21 on 9-of-16 shooting overall and three of six from outside the arc. She also had six rebounds and two assists.

Viapiano finished with 10 points and came within one rebound of a double-double. Bentley also received nine points apiece from Thompson and Meriggioli, as well as eight off the bench from Fontaine.

Assumption was led by junior guard Meghan Reen (Norwood) and freshman forward Monica Spain (Braintree) with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Bentley shot 46 percent overall and made eight three-pointers, same as Assumption. The Falcons also had six more rebounds and three more assists, as well as two less turnovers.

In a rarity, neither team missed a free throw in the game. Bentley only took four and Assumption attempted just three.

Bentley will be on the road again Saturday for a 1:30 pm game at Franklin Pierce.
