No. 17 Bentley Visits Southern Connecticut State Saturday with Falcons Seeking 5th Straight

WALTHAM, Mass. – After improving to 10-0 away from the Dana Center with a 67-53 win at Adelphi University Wednesday, the Bentley University women's basketball team will be back on the road Saturday, this time for a 1:30 pm game at Southern Connecticut State. As is the case with all conference games, fans can watch live on NE10NOW.tv.

Bentley will take a four-game winning streak, a number 17 ranking in Division II and a 17-2 overall record into the contest. Coach Barbara Stevens' squad leads the Northeast-10's Northeast Division by two games over Saint Anselm in its search for a 25th NE10 regular season title.

Southern Connecticut has won its last two games, including a 73-69 victory at Stonehill last Saturday, to improve to 12-7 overall and 6-5 conference. The Owls are tied for second in the NE10's Southwest Division, three games back of red-hot Le Moyne College.

The win at Adelphi Saturday saw the Falcons dominate inside, with 32 points in the paint, and knock down ten three-pointers for the second straight game and the sixth time this season.

Junior forward Monica Viapiano (Holden/Holy Name HS) led the inside game with a career-high 21 points, along with nine rebounds, two blocks and a steal. She made seven baskets during the middle two quarters, matching Adelphi's total during that time frame.

Five different Falcons connected from downtown with both senior guard Amy McConnell (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor HS) and sophomore guard Katie Meriggioli (Waunakee, Wis./ Edgewood HS) dropping three through the basket.

Bentley leads the NE10 in scoring (74.5 per game) despite not having any player listed among the top 20 scorers in the conference.

Four of the seven players who have seen action in 15 or more games own double-figure scoring averages with Meriggioli back on top of the list at 11.9 points per game. Senior center Victoria Lux (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy) follows at 11.7, McConnell will return to her home state at 10.7 and Viapiano's average is up to 10.1.

Five different players have made at least 19 three-pointers with sophomore forward Marissa Fontaine (Franklin/Bishop Feehan HS) leading the way with 33. Junior guard Julia Ford (Charlton/ Noble and Greenough) leads the conference in three-point accuracy (19 of 39, .487) and McConnell is one of two players in the NE10 with at least 30 threes and a .430 accuracy mark from deep.

The defense has limited the opposition to 54.8 points during the current win streak with the opponents shooting just .337 overall and 11 of 63 from three-point range.

Southern Connecticut features junior forward Kiana Steinauer, who leads Division in rebounding by a wide margin with 15.8 a game. She is also fourth in the NE10 in scoring (18.0) and third in steals (52). Earlier this season, she had 33 points and an incredible 30 rebounds in a rout of Concordia (N.Y.). Last Saturday against Stonehill, she came up with ten steals, tying for the second most in that category this season.

No one in the NE10 takes or makes more three-pointers than Owl senior guard Amanda Pfohl. She has built her 14.3 scoring average by making 63 of 176 from outside the arc.

Most recently, Southern Connecticut defeated Franklin Pierce, 72-62. Steinauer put up 27 and 18 while junior guard Imani Wheeler scored 22.

Bentley has won five in a row against the Owls, including 64-51 last season, and is 14-2 in the series since current head coach Kate Lynch led Southern to the 2007 NCAA Division II national championship.

Bentley, after a midweek bye, will return to action next Saturday, Feb. 2, with a home game against Pace University.
