No. 10 Bentley Looks to Bounce Back Saturday at Saint Rose

WALTHAM, Mass. – Other than the Bentley University Falcons, only three women's basketball teams in the NCAA Division II East Region have two or fewer losses. The Falcons have seen two of team, USciences and Le Moyne College, since returning from the holiday break and unfortunately, the nation's tenth-ranked Division II team has come up on the short end of the scoreboard both times.

Barbara Stevens, the fourth winningest coach in women's basketball history, and her team will face another tough test Saturday when they visit the College of Saint Rose Golden Knights for a 1:30 game at Nolan Gymnasium in Albany N.Y. (webcast on NE10 NOW). It'll be the Falcons' first road trip in more than a month.

Saint Rose, 10-4 overall and 5-1 at home, is riding a six-game winning streak in which they haven't allowed more than 60 points. In fact, only twice all season have they allowed that many, 66 in a three-point season-opening against Daemen and an 87-53 loss at American International in November.

Bentley, 13-2 overall and the Northeast Division leader in the Northeast-10 Conference, will be looking to rebound from a nightmarish 58-40 loss to Le Moyne, a game in which no one on the team could get untracked offensively. It was a tough performance at the other end as well with the Dolphins scoring 38 points in the paint.

Despite that uncharacteristic performance. Bentley continues to lead the conference in numerous categories, including scoring (77.3), three-point accuracy (.407), free throws made and attempted (14.7-21.5), assists (19.5) and scoring margin (+17.8).

Bentley's top scorers are sophomore guard Katie Meriggioli (Waunakee, Wis,/Edgewood HS) and senior All-Conference center Victoria Lux (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy), with averages of 12.7 and 12.3 points, respectively. They are also the team's top rebounders with Lux's 6.6 norm six-tenths better than her teammate.62-53

Over the last four games, senior guard and co-captain Amy McConnell (South Windsor, Conn./ South Windsor HS) has raised her season production to 10.5 points and nearly four assists. She's averaged 13.5 points during that time while shooting 60 percent overall and 50 percent from three.

Junior forward Monica Viapiano (Holden/Wachusett Reg. HS) has generally been a factor off the bench with 9.5 points per game and a .560 field goal percentage.

Saint Rose's top scorer is senior guard Ashley Vanderwall, who had a 38-point night against Georgian Court earlier in the season and is coming off a 23-point performance in a 62-53 victory at St. Michael's. She averages 14.5 points and is one of the NE10's top three-point threats, both in terms of accuracy (.450) and volume (3.2 a game).

The Falcons will also have to contend with junior guard Courtney Clasen and six-foot senior Krista Birthwright. Clasen averages 10.5 points and Birthwright follows at 10.1, along with 14 blocks.

Saint Rose ranks in the top five in the NE10 in scoring defense, field goal percentage defense and defending the three.

In last year's game, Bentley outscored the Golden Knights 28-17 in the second quarter and went on to a 76-65 victory.

Bentley, which is coming off a five-game home stand, will return to the Dana Center for two games next week, Wednesday against American International and Saturday against New Haven. Next Saturday will also mark the dedication of the Barbara Stevens Court in the Dana Center.
