Bentley Takes 11-Game Winning Streak to Merrimack for Regular Season Finale

WALTHAM, Mass. – Before hosting a quarterfinal game in the Northeast-10 Conference Championships Sunday afternoon, the Bentley University women's basketball team will take its 11-game winning streak to Merrimack College for the regular season finale Tuesday night. Tip-off on the Hammel Court is set for 5:30 pm with a free webcast at www.merrimackathletics.tv.

Bentley, ranked 15th in last week's Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division II poll, has already wrapped up the NE10's Northeast Division title with the Falcons leading second-place Assumption College by six games.

The Falcons have pushed their record to 23-4 overall and 19-1 conference after winning their last 11 by an average of 18.5 points. They are coming off a 92-66 win over Saint Anselm College in the home finale, a game in which coach Barbara Stevens' team shot .515 and was a season-best +26 on the boards.

Merrimack, 12-13 overall, is tied for fourth in the Northeast Division with a 10-10 record. Already assured of a spot in the conference championships, the Warriors will host a first-round game with a win over Bentley and would travel for a first-round game with a loss.

Bentley, which has averaged over 40 points in the paint during the last four games, saw two players put up double-doubles in Saturday's win over the Hawks. Senior All-America forward Jen Gemma (Milton/Fontbonne Academy) finished with 20 points and 17 rebounds in 29 minutes while sophomore Victoria Lux (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy) followed with a season-high 19 points and 12 boards.

Gemma, who has averaged 20.5 points and 11 rebounds during the streak, has moved to within 50 points of Lauren Battista's school scoring record (2,112). On Saturday, she achieved her third career 500-point season, a feat never before accomplished by a Falcon.

Junior guards Lauren Green (Damascus, Md./Damascus HS) and Macchi Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward School) are Bentley's other double-figure scorers, averaging 12.2 and 11.4 points respectively. Green, who has moved to fifth in program history in career threes (172), is 43 points away from 1,000. Smith owns the best free throw percentage in the conference at .891 and leads the team in both assists (119) and steals (39).

Lux has become a force on the boards with ten or more in six of the last eight games, including the last three.

Merrimack is 3-6 during its last nine games, a stretch in which the Warriors have struggled offensively. They've only averaged 53.3 points during that span and have shot under 40 percent five times.

The Warriors have a balanced offense with four players scoring between 8.8 and 10.8 points. Senior guard My'Asia Alston is at the top of the list, and both Hannah Neild and Lindsay Werner, a pair of sophomore guards, have made 52 three-pointers.

Merrimack gave Bentley a battle when the two met back on Nov. 16. The Falcons, after leading by 12 with 2:17 left, survived a barrage of threes in the final two minutes and held on for a 68-65 win after a buzzer-beating attempt from downtown was off the mark. Green made five of six threes for Bentley, finishing with a team-high 17.
