No. 19 Bentley Hosts Stonehill Wednesday with Sights on a 6-Game Winning Streak

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Bentley University women's basketball team will be looking for its first six-game winning streak of the season when the Falcons host Stonehill College Wednesday night, the 105th renewal of one of the top rivalries in Division II.

Game time is set for 5:30 pm with a free webcast available at www.bentleyfalcons.tv.

This will be the third time this season that coach Barbara Stevens' club will be looking to extend a five-game streak. They've come up empty the first two times with losses at New York Tech (72-60) and at home against Molloy (56-55).

Bentley, 17-4 overall and ranked 19th in Division II by both the coaches and the media, enters the month of February with records of 13-1 in Northeast-10 Conference action and 9-1 at the Dana Center where they've outscored their opponents by nearly 17 game. The Falcons lead the conference's Northeast Division by four games over Assumption (Saturday's opponent) with seven to play.

Stonehill has been up-and-down this season, winning its last two to improve to 9-9 overall and 8-6 in the conference. The Skyhawks are 9-1 this season when holding their opponents under 60 and 0-8 when giving up 60 or more. In the NE10, they are in a three-way tie for third, a game back of Assumption and five behind the Falcons.

Bentley's most recent victory, a 70-67 win at Southern Connecticut State in the final crossover game of the season, was the fourth of the season decided by three or less and capped a 7-1 month of January. The Falcons scored the final seven points, including three free throws by junior guard Lauren Green (Damascus, Md./Damascus HS) with 17.3 seconds left that accounted for the 16th and final lead change of the afternoon.

Senior All-America forward and reigning Northeast-10 Player of the Year Jen Gemma (Milton/ Fontbonne Academy) put up her third double-double of the season (24 points, 12 rebounds) while continuing to approach both 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. Her totals currently stand at 1,940 and 969.

Gemma averaged a double-double in January (18.3 points, 10.1 rebounds) as she elevated her season norms to 18.2 and 7.8.

Gemma is followed on Bentley's scoring list by Green and junior guard Macchi Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward School) with averages of 12.4 and 11.0, respectively. Green is the team's top three-point threat (54-132, .409) and Smith leads the Falcons in steals (31) and assists (96).

Stonehill, 11th in the NE-10 in scoring at 59.2, is led by junior guard Courtney Walsh and junior forward Samantha Hyslip with averages of 13.9 and 13.7, respectively. Walsh leads the conference in three-pointers (59) and Hyslip is second in field goal percentage (.511).

In the earlier meeting this season, Bentley closed with an 11-4 run after the two teams were even at 45 with under four minutes to play. Seven of those were scored by Gemma, who finished with 25 on 11 of 19 shooting. Hyslip was a standout for Stonehill with 20 points. She was 8 of 14 while her teammates struggled to 11 of 41.

On Saturday, Bentley will be on the road for the third time in four games, playing at Assumption in Stevens' 1,000th career game as Falcons' head coach.
