Bentley Hosts New Haven Saturday, Looking to Stay Unbeaten in NE10 Play

WALTHAM, Mass. – Before interrupting a stretch of playing seven of eight games  at home with a Wednesday night game at Adelphi University, the Bentley University women's basketball team will put its perfect Northeast-10 Conference record on the line Saturday afternoon when it hosts the University of New Haven. Game time at the Dana Center is 1:30 pm with a free webcast available at www.bentleyfalcons.tv.

Bentley, ranked 17th in this week's WBCA Division II poll, has won its first seven conference games this season, resulting in a three-game lead in the loss column in the NE-10's Northeast Division. The Falcons, coming off a record-setting 103-66 win over Holy Family University in the final non-conference game, are 11-3 overall, including 5-1 at home.

New Haven hasn't had the same level of success so far this season, winning only two of 12 overall, just one of seven in the conference and one of six on the road. Most recently, they came up short at Merrimack College, dropping a 56-45 decision.

In the Holy Family game New Year's Day, Bentley put up its highest offensive output in  16 years while registering 30 assists and setting school records for three-pointers in a game (15) and points in a quarter (31 in the second). Junior All-Northeast-10 guard Lauren Green (Damascus, Md./Damascus HS) and senior All-America forward Jen Gemma (Milton/Fontbonne Academy) led the offense, combining for 46 points.

Green , before sitting out the fourth quarter, knocked down seven of 11 from deep and finished with a career-best 26 points. That elevated her season average to 13.0 and her three-point accuracy to .437 overall, including a sparkling .515 at home.

Gemma, Bentley's top scorer (18.3) and rebounder (6.4), passed Alison Fay '84 and Kelly Barker '01 on Bentley's all-time scoring list with her second straight 20-point effort, moving into second. Her career total of 1,814 trails only the 2,112 put up by 2014 National Player of the Year Lauren Battista during her four seasons.

Rounding out the usual starting five for Hall of Fame coach Barbara Stevens  are six-one sophomore Victoria Lux (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy) and a pair of junior guards, Macchi Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward School) and Trevena Bennett (Union, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's School).

Smith averages 10.1 points and 4.3 rebounds, Lux has put up 9.7 points and 7.3 rebounds a game while starting the last three, and Bennett is coming off an eight-point effort against Holy Family.

Bentley will enter the weekend number one in the Northeast-10 in scoring (69.3), assists (15.4) and scoring margin (11.2) after winning five of its last six. New Haven, on the other hand, is in the bottom two in scoring (56.9) and shooting percentages (.358 overall, .254 from three, .642 free throws).

Players to watch for New Haven include a trio of sophomores. Five-foot-eight Alexandria Kerr leads the Chargers in scoring at 13.3 and is number five in the NE10 in rebounds (9.2). Allieyah Cubbage is the team's other double-figure scorer (10.9) and six-foot-one center Katia Oge has blocked a shot in 20 consecutive games.

Wednesday's game at Adelphi will pit the two divisional leaders against each other for the only time during the regular season. The Panthers, 12-2 overall, will take a two-game lead in the Southwest Division into Saturday's game at St. Michael's.
