No. 14 Bentley Looks to Continue NE10 Success Wednesday against St. Michael’s

WALTHAM, Mass. – Owning winning streaks of ten games against conference opponents and 13 at home, the Bentley University women's basketball team will be back at the Dana Center Wednesday for a Northeast-10 Conference encounter with St. Michael's College.

The opening jump is scheduled for 5:30 pm and a free webcast will be available on www.bentleyfalcons.tv.

Bentley, number 14 in this week's WBCA Division II national coaches' poll, returns to the Dana Center after four straight on the road with records of 7-2 overall and 5-0 Northeast-10. Coach Barbara Stevens' club won two games in Manchester, N.H. last week, 67-54 at Saint Anselm and 61-58 at Southern New Hampshire Saturday.

The latter marked the Falcons' third NE10 win by three or less already this season. At SNHU, they trailed by nine early in the fourth before closing with a 19-7 run to earn the victory. Senior All-America forward Jen Gemma (Milton/Fontbonne Academy) had seven during the spurt, junior guard Lauren Green (Damascus, Md./Damascus HS) provided six and four free throws by junior guard Macchi Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward School) in the final 67 seconds accounted for the game's final points.

Those three have been the team's top scorers for the season with Gemma at the top of the stat sheet with averages of 16.4 points and 6.3 rebounds. Green follows at 13.3 with the majority of her scoring coming via 25 three-pointers, and Smith contributes 11.3 points, 4.8 rebounds,  3.8 assists and two steals a game.

Gemma moved into fifth on Bentley's all-time scoring list on Saturday with her current total of 1,706 putting her 22 back of number four, Danielle Chaisson '98. She's also 13 rebounds away from taking the fourth spot from Lauren Battista '14.

Sophomore forward Victoria Lux (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy) has been the top contributor off the bench, averaging 3.8 points and 5.1 rebounds while playing about 14 minutes a game.

St. Michael's will make the trip from Vermont  at 3-4 overall and 3-2 Northeast-10 following losses to Merrimack and Stonehill last week. Against the Skyhawks, the Purple Knights came up a point shy, 59-58, when a late three-pointer was off the mark.

St. Michael's is led by Leah Spencer, a junior guard who rarely comes off the floor. Playing over 37 minutes a game, she leads the team in scoring (15.3) and assists (3.3), and is also second in rebounds (4.6).

Six-foot-two sophomore Samantha Delaney, senior guard Indira Evora and sophomore guard Emily Ferreri  are also scoring threats for SMC. Delaney averaged 12.4 points and 7.1 rebounds, Evora is at an even ten points, and Ferreri nets 8.1 a game.

Bentley took both meetings from St. Michael's last year, 77-71 on the road and 68-50 at home. Gemma led the Falcons in the two games, averaging 20.5 points and 11 rebounds.

On Saturday, Bentley will travel to Stonehill for a 1:30 pm encounter with the Skyhawks. Entering Wednesday's action, the Falcons and Skyhawks are 1-2 in the NE10's Northeast Division.
