No. 11 Bentley Women Looks to Get Back on Track Wednesday at Saint Anselm

WALTHAM, Mass. – Following a pair of losses over the weekend, the Bentley University women's basketball team will look to get back on track when it resumes a stretch of four straight on the road Wednesday at Saint Anselm College. Tip off at Stoutenburgh Gym is 5:30 pm with a webcast available at www.saintanselmhawks.tv.

Bentley, number 11 in this week's WBCA Division II coaches' poll, will make the trip to Manchester, N.H. owning records of 5-2 overall and 3-0 Northeast-10 after coming up short at both NYIT (72-60) and Bridgeport (64-60). Poor shooting (.352) and turnovers (22.5 a game) were issues in both contests as the Falcons tasted defeat for the first time this season.

Saint Anselm, 3-2 overall and 1-2 NE-10, will also be looking to end a two-game losing streak. After a 3-0 start, the Hawks fell to St. Michael's, 62-57, and Stonehill, 60-59, during Thanksgiving week.

Bentley's top performer over the weekend was senior forward Parker Gregory (Fishkill, N.Y./ John Jay HS), who averaged 12 points and 8.5 rebounds in the two games while making 11 of 14 shots. Included was her first career double-double, 16 points and 10 boards in the NYIT game.

For the season, the trio of senior All-America forward Jen Gemma (Milton/Fontbonne Academy), Lauren Green (Damascus, Md./Damascus HS) and Macchi Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./ Windward School) have done the bulk of the scoring, combining for 40 points a game.

Gemma tops the list at 16.7 as she continues her climb up Bentley's all-time scoring list. Currently seventh with 1,675 points, she needs 21 to pass Kim Brennan '11 for sixth place and 27 to overtake Kim Cummings '96) for fifth. She's already fifth in rebounds with 846.

Green, a junior guard, follows at 12.1 with a team-best 19 three-pointers and a .432 accuracy mark from outside the arc. Smith nets 11 points a game and also contributes on average 4.9 rebounds, four assists and 1.7 steals.

Saint Anselm struggled offensively during its recent two losses, shooting 37 percent overall and 24 percent from three. That compares to .497 and .465 threes during the three wins. The Hawks, after opening the season with 17 and 12 triples in the first two contests, have totaled only ten three-pointers in the last three games.

Senior guards Caitlyn Abela and Candace Andrews have led the Hawks in scoring, averaging 15.2 and 13.4 points, respectively. Both have shot well from three with Abela 14 of 31 (.452) and Andrews (.447). The latter also leads the NE-10 in steals, averaging 3.4 a game.

Last year, Bentley and Saint Anselm met three times with the home team prevailing each time. The Falcons prevailed 60-46 on Dec. 7, the Hawks evened the score on Feb 20 (65-57) and Bentley's march to the national semifinals began with a 62-54 win in the NCAA regional quarterfinals Mar. 11. Since the loss in its last visit to Saint Anselm, coach Barbara Stevens' team is unbeaten in its last eight games against conference opponents.

Bentley will also be in the Queen City Saturday for a 1:30 game against Southern New Hampshire that will air on NESN Plus and NESN National.
