Bentley Begins Busy Holiday Week by Hosting Assumption Tuesday

WALTHAM, Mass. – The 4-0 Bentley University women's basketball team will begin a stretch of three games in a span of six days, with Thanksgiving sandwiched in between, Tuesday night when it hosts Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference action.

Tip-off at the Dana Center is set for 5:30 pm with a free webcast available at www.bentleyfalcons.tv.

Coach Barbara Stevens' team stayed unbeaten by the slimmest of margins last week, edging Merrimack College 68-65 and Franklin Pierce University 61-60 with both opponents having the opportunity to tie or win the game on a final shot. Those were the first two conference games of the year for the defending Northeast-10 champions and the current number one-ranked team in the D2SIDA Media Poll.

Closing out the game was a problem in both contests for Bentley. The Falcons were outscored 15-6 in the final two minutes by Merrimack after leading by 12, and 6-0 in the final five minutes by the Ravens after being up 61-54.

Junior point guard Macchi Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward School) played a key role in last week's wins as she provided 10.5 points, five rebounds and 5.5 assists a game while making 73 percent of her two-point attempts (8-11) and all five of her free throws. She's averaging 9.8 points this season, up from 5.4 a year ago when she was still recovering from a December 2014 injury.

Senior All-America forward Jen Gemma (Milton/Fontbonne Academy) leads the Falcons in scoring, averaging 18 a game along with 7.5 rebounds. She'll be playing her 100th career game on Tuesday and is 23 points shy of surpassing another Bentley All-America, Tracie Seymour '92, for seventh on the program's all-time scoring list.

Bentley's other double-figure scorer is junior guard Lauren Green (Damascus, Md./Damascus HS), who is producing 13.0 points a game despite being kept off the scoreboard Saturday. She remains one of the NE-10 leaders in three-point accuracy, connecting at a 54 percent success rate.

Stevens' team will enter Tuesday's contest leading the NE-10 in fewest points allowed (54.0), third in opponents' field goal percentage (.342) and fourth in rebound margin (+6.0).

Assumption will come into the Dana at 1-2 overall following conference losses to Stonehill, 56-48, and St. Michael's, 81-78 in overtime. In the latter contest, the Greyhounds led by 13 at the half and had a chance at a game-winning basket at the end of regulation.

Assumption is led by seniors Jo Impellizeri and Allison Stoddard. Impellizeri, a six-foot-one forward, averages 13.7 points and 7.7 rebounds while Stoddard, a five-seven guard, provides 11 points, 4.3 assists and two steals a game.

The two teams split last season with each winning on its home court, Assumption 78-72 and Bentley 77-65. Gemma powered the Falcons in both games, averaging 27 points and nine rebounds.

After returning from Thanksgiving, Bentley faces a pair of road games, Saturday afternoon (1 pm) on Long Island at NYIT and 25 hours later at Bridgeport.
