Bentley Takes On Lubbock Christian Tonight with Berth in National Championship Game on the Line

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – A trip to Indianapolis for the April 4 NCAA Division II women's basketball national championship game will be on the line when the Bentley University Falcons square off against the Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaps tonight at the Sanford Pentagon in a national semifinal game.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7 pm ET (6 pm CT) with the game airing exclusively on the CBS Sports Network.

Bentley, a final four participant for the third time in five years and the tenth time since 1989, improved to 29-5 overall and ran its current win streak to eight with a 53-52 victory over Virginia Union Tuesday. The Falcons held the second highest scoring team in Division II to 33 points below their season norm and to a .316 field goal percentage while registering their 16 consecutive postseason win.

Lubbock Christian, which is looking to join the 2014 Bentley Falcons and the 1995 North Dakota State Bison as Division II's only unbeaten national champions, held off Florida Southern in the quarterfinals Tuesday, winning 73-69 to improve to 33-0. This is the Lady Chaps' first run in the NCAA tournament after years of success at the NAIA level.

Lubbock Christian will have the size advantage over the Falcons with the starting lineup for coach Steve Gomez including six-four Tess Bruffey, the only non-senior to start, and six-five Kellyn Schneider. Their presence is a significant reason why the Lady Chaps lead Division II in blocks (6.9).

The Lady Chaps, who have won 28 of their 33 games by 20 or more and only two by less than ten, feature five-ten point guard Nicole Hampton, a D2CCCA All-America. She leads the nation in assist-turnover ratio and is averaging 14.5 points, 7.4 rebounds, 6.1 assists and three steals.

Bentley did a standout job defensively in its Elite Eight win over Virginia Union while maintaining a slim lead for the game's final 38 minutes. During the final 9:20 when the two clubs were never separated by more than three points, the Falcons gave up only two field goals and three free throws over the course of 18 Lady Panther possessions.

Junior All-America forward Jen Gemma (Milton, Mass./Fontbonne Academy), the only Falcon currently averaging in doubles for the season, was also the only one Tuesday, finishing with 16 points and 12 rebounds for her 14th double-double.

Five others scored between five and nine, including freshman forward  Vanessa Lux (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy). She scored all nine of her points in the opening quarter and also helped with 11 rebounds and five assists.

In the other semifinal, 37-2 Alaska-Anchorage will take on 26-9 Grand Valley State. Alaska rolled to a 79-55 win over Francis Marion in the only quarterfinal that didn't go down to the wire, and GVSU edged Pittsburg State, 59-56.
