Gemma Selected as Northeast-10 Women’s Basketball Player of the Year

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior forward Jen Gemma (Milton/Fontbonne Academy) joined an impressive list of Bentley University Falcons who have been selected as the Northeast-10 Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Year when the conference announced its 2016 award winners on Friday.

Gemma became the tenth Bentley player who earn the honor, following in the footsteps of Lauren Battista (2012, 2014), Keri Flynn (2003), Kelly Barker (2001), Lauren Fuller (2000), Danielle Chaisson (1998), Kim Cummings (1996), Kim Penwell (1992), Stacy Pahl (1990) and Alison Fay (1982, 1983, 1984).

"In my opinion, there is no one more deserving of this award than Jen Gemma," said Bentley head coach and 950-game winner Barbara Stevens. "In a conference full of exceptional players, Jen has been a dominant force for our team this season, leading the team to the Northeast 10's Northeast Division title.  She has demonstrated the ability to consistently provide scoring and rebounding for our team, even when double and triple teamed.  Speaking on behalf of Jen's  teammates and coaching staff, we are thrilled for her and tremendously proud of her!"

Gemma, the conference's top scorer for the second straight season, was also a repeat selection on the All-Northeast-10 first team.

Also recognized by the Northeast-10 were sophomore guard Lauren Green (Damascus, Md./ Damascus HS) and freshman guard Megan Lewis (Sevenoaks, England).

Gemma will enter the 2016 Northeast-10 Championships with averages of 19.7 points, 9.6 rebounds and 1.2 blocks. In addition to being number one in scoring, the six-footer is third in rebounds and seventh in blocks. She's also in the top ten in field goals (195), field goal percentage (.457), free throws (123-155) and free throw accuracy (.794)

Gemma, who is on pace to break the Bentley single season scoring record of 19.5 that she set last season, has climbed to 15th on the program's all-time scoring list with her total of 1,392 points second more by a Falcon prior to her senior year (Battista, 1,504). She's also 13th in career rebounds (738) and her averages of 16.0 points and 8.5 rebounds rank second and fifth in school history.

Green has been Bentley's number two scorer, averaging 9.6 points, and one of the conference's top three-point threats. She finished the regular season ranking second in accuracy from deep, making 47 of 114 for a .412 percentage.

Green, an All-Rookie honoree last season, has scored in doubles 13 times and made multiple three-pointers 15 times. Her career three-point percentage of .403 ranks fifth in program history.

Lewis leads the Falcons in assists (77) and steals (52) while averaging 9.3 points and 5.5 rebounds during her rookie season. She's knocked down 32 three-pointers, including six of ten during the final three minutes of games.

Since Christmas, Lewis has elevated her game  with her averages 11.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists and two steals while shooting 46 percent overall and 45 percent from three.

Bentley, which finished the regular season at 22-5 overall and is ranked number one in the NCAA Division II East Region, will begin its bid for a 19th Northeast-10 tournament championship Sunday when it hosts a quarterfinal game, against either Stonehill or Le Moyne, at 2 pm.
