Bentley Aims for 4th Win in 5 Games Saturday before National Television Spotlight

WALTHAM, Mass. – The CBS Sports Network cameras and broadcast crew will be at the Dana Center Saturday when the Bentley University women's basketball team hosts St. Michael's College in a game that could play a key role in determining a berth in the Northeast-10 Conference championship field. Tip-off is scheduled for slightly after 12 noon and the game will be available online (www.ncaa.com/liveschedule/2015/02/14) as well as on cable systems across the country.

Five teams from the NE-10's Northeast Division qualify for the conference championship tournament and with the regular season down to its final four games, Bentley and St. Michael's are two of four tied for that coveted fifth spot. Southern New Hampshire, who the Falcons will host Wednesday, and Saint Anselm are also in that mix.

Bentley, which needs a win Saturday to avoid being swept in the season series with the Purple Knights, has won three of its last four to keep its postseason hopes alive. The reigning NCAA Division II national champions are 10-13 overall and 5-12 in conference play.

St. Michael's, following a rough January, has won two of its last three and comes into the Dana Center at 10-12 overall. The Purple Knights have been 8-4 at home this season, including a 69-57 victory over the Falcons back on Dec. 6, but are only 2-8 outside of Vermont, including a 60-58 victory at Saint Anselm on Wednesday.

Bentley's win at Merrimack earlier this week featured another dominating performance from NE-10 scoring leader Jen Gemma (Milton/Fontbonne Academy). The six-foot sophomore poured in a career-high 31 points, the third time this season she's put up that number, while accounting for more than half of the Falcons' offensive production in a 59-54 victory.

Fifteen of Gemma's points came during a 22-2 second-half run that turned a 10-point deficit into a 10-point Bentley lead. She established career bests for free throws made (11) and attempted (17), had 13 rebounds for the second straight game and helped hold off a late Warrior charge with both a block and a drawn charge in the final in the final 90 seconds.

The four-time NE-10 Spalding Player of the Week has totaled 121 points and put up three double-doubles in her last five games, raising her scoring average to a season-high 19.8. Gemma is also number two in the NE-10 in rebounding, collecting 10.5 a game.

Bentley's other double-figure scorer is freshman guard Lauren Green (Damascus, Md./Damascus HS), whose 11.2 average is the best by an NE-10 freshman. She has made nearly 40 percent of her long-distance shots and leads the Falcons with 39 three-pointers.

Sophomore forward Brittany Gregory (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay HS) has been productive in recent games, averaging 8.6 points and nearly five rebounds over the last five games. During that stretch, she's raised her field goal percentage to .485 while making 16 of 29 from the floor.

Prior to the game, Bentley will hold Senior Day festivities, recognizing guard Kelsey Mattice (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero North Syracuse HS) and forward Carlene Kluge (Reading/Reading HS) for their contributions. Mattice averages 7.3 points and leads the team in assists (54) while Kluge (5.6 ppg) has made her last nine field goal attempts.

St. Michael's is led by junior guard Makenzie Burud, one of only two NE-10 players averaging at least 16 points, seven rebounds, two assists and 1.5 steals. Her 16.0 scoring average is sixth best in the conference and she's had five double-doubles.

Senior forward Maggie Sabine is next on the Purple Knight scoring list at 12.9, and sophomore forward Indira Evora has also been productive, putting up just a shade under ten points a game while ranking third in the NE-10 in steals (2.7).

St. Michael's is one of the better shooting teams in the NE-10, ranking third in free throw accuracy and sixth in field goal percentage, and is also third in steals, coming up with 8.4 a game. On the other hand, the Knights are last in opponents' field goal percentage and is virtually tied with Bentley for most points allowed at 68.3.

In the first game between these two clubs, St. Michael's dominated in the paint, 42-14, while limiting the Falcons to just 10 of 31 inside the three-point arc. Burud filled the stat sheet with 17 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and three steals, and Sabine followed with 17. Green drained five three-pointers for Bentley, finishing with a game-high 21, and Gemma was held out of double figures for the only time this season.

Bentley will also be at the Dana Center Wednesday, closing out the home schedule against Southern New Hampshire in another contest that will have a significant effect on the NE-10 standings. Game time is 5:30 pm.
