33-0 Bentley Takes on Cal Poly Pomona with Berth on National Championship Game on the Line

ERIE, Pa. – Although they've been two of the premier programs in Division II women's basketball history, the Bentley University Falcons and the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos have met just once over the years and that one was a classic a quarter-century ago.

Playing in Cleveland, Miss. in a national quarterfinal game back on Mar. 24, 1989, Cal Poly Pomona used a buzzer-beater to edge Falcons in double overtime, 84-83, and claim a berth in the national championship game.

Twenty five years and two days later, the two will renew acquaintances and once again, the prize will be an appearance in the national championship game, slated for 7 pm Friday night. Tonight's Final Four game at the Erie Insurance Arena in Erie, Pa. will tip at 8:30 pm and can be seen live on CBS Sports Network, as well as online at www.ncaa.com/liveschedule.

Bentley will enter the game at 33-0 and ranked number one in the USA TODAY Sports/WBCA Division II coaches' poll after punching their ticket for a second semifinal in three years last night. The Falcons, after falling behind by four, outscored sixth-ranked Drury University 26-14 over the final 9:30 to advance, 74-66.

All-Americas Courtney Finn (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop HS) and Lauren Battista (North Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames HS) combined for 50 with Finn netting a career-best 30 and Battista scoring nine of her 20 in the final five minutes. Finn, who played all 40 minutes, was scoreless for the first eight minutes before heating up.

Cal Poly Pomona, whose resume includes five national championships, overcame an early 11-2 deficit to take down Edinboro University, 81-61. The Broncos outshot the Fighting Scots 54-36 percent and had a 20-9 advantage in free throws. CPP received a dominating effort from six-foot-one All-America Jade Blackwell with the Arizona State transfer providing 35 points, nine rebounds, three steals and a pair of blocks.

Battista (17.2 ppg, 5.1 rpg, .577 fg pct) and Blackwell (19.2 ppg, 9.2 rpg) are two of the three finalists for the WBCA Division II Player of the Year award.

Both teams also have a Capital One Academic All-America. Battista, with a 3.95 GPA, was the Academic All-America of the Year and CPP guard Ariel Marsh was voted to the second team.

In the other semifinal, fifth-ranked West Texas A&M will take on number ten Nova Southeastern at 6 pm.
