Four Top 12 Teams to Square Off Tonight in NCAA Regional Semis; 29-1 Bentley Faces 28-2 Holy Family at 7:30

WALTHAM, Mass. – The "crème-de-la-crème" of NCAA Division II East Region women's basketball will be at Bentley University's Dana Center tonight when four teams ranked in the top 12 of Division II square off for a berth in Monday night's regional championship game with a berth in the Elite Eight at stake.

The doubleheader will begin at 5 pm with second-seeded and number 12 Stonehill College facing third-seed and 10th-ranked Dowling College. That will be followed at 7:30 pm with the top-seeded and number three Bentley University Falcons taking on fourth-seeded and number six Holy Family University in a rematch of last year's regional final.

Combined, the four teams are an astounding 107-10 with four of the losses coming against other regional semifinalists. Seven regionals were conducted across the country on Friday, and the East is the only one where all four top seeds advanced.

Bentley, the two-time defending regional champion, enters Saturday's game once-beaten and a win away from the program's 11th 30-win season in 25 years after a 68-57 win over LIU Post Friday. Coach Barbara Stevens' team has been impressive in the second half during the postseason, shooting 56 percent from the field while outscoring Adelphi, Franklin Pierce, Assumption and the Pioneers by an average of 13 points.

Holy Family, which has lost only once since opening the season with a 78-64 loss to Bentley at the Dana Center Nov. 11, overcame a 14-point second-half deficit to oust Assumption College in the first round, 68-62. The game was tied at 62 before the 28-2 Tigers closed with six unanswered over the final 80 seconds to extend their winning streak to 16. This will be Holy Family's eighth straight appearance in the Round of 32.

Dowling improved to 26-3 with a 62-51 win over New York Institute of Technology, the Golden Lions' fourth win of the year over their Long Island rival and their first-ever in NCAA tournament play. That was the team's 11th straight win, and Dowling is 20-1 since dropping a five-point decision to Bentley back in December.

Stonehill, playing for the first time in 12 days, struggled in the first half against Franklin Pierce, but came alive in the second half to dispatch the Ravens 78-66 and improve to 24-4. The Skyhawks are the only team this season to own a win over Bentley, 73-66 back on Feb. 23.

Each of the four winning teams featured an outstanding individual performance during the quarterfinals. For Bentley, that belonged to junior forward and All-America Lauren Battista (North Easton/Oliver Ames HS) who scored 27 points, including 17 in the second half, on 12 of 17 shooting. She also gave the Falcons five rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Dowling center Danielle Wilson, who was Baylor University's center before Brittany Griner, amassed 23 points and 22 rebounds against NYIT. For Stonehill, it was junior guard Mary Louise Dixon, with a career-high 32 points, 12 rebounds and five assists.  And Holy Family received 25 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks from senior post Erin Mann.

In last year's regional final, Bentley was on the short end of a 38-26 score against Holy Family. That was erased before the first media timeout of the second half and the Falcons went on to score 58 second-half points en route to an 84-73 win.

The Bentley-Holy Family season opener 125 days ago saw Bentley close out the first half with a 23-8 run over the final nine minutes of the first half to go up 16, 39-23. The lead was down to seven with about four to play before the Falcons closed with a 13-6 spurt over the final 2:30, a run that began with a three from junior forward Caleigh Crowell (Harwich/Worcester Academy).
