Wicked Local Waltham: 'Bentley University women's basketball team showed Elite fighting spirit'

Scott Souza, sports editor of Wicked Local Waltham and the Waltham News Tribune, recapped Bentley's trip to San Antonio for the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Elite.  Here's his story, which appeared on the website (www.wickedlocal.com/waltham) on March 26 and in the paper on March 30.

WALTHAM — Bentley University women's basketball coach Barbara Stevens says she doesn't know how it happened.

How her team – once ranked No. 1 in the country – went from a squad that won so convincingly, so often, to a team that had to scratch and claw its way to victories at nearly every turn.

It happened in the Northeast-10 Conference semifinals when the Falcons fought back for a grueling, double-overtime victory against Franklin Pierce. Then it happened again in the NCAA Division II East Regional semis when the opponent was again FPC and the Falcons scored the final seven points of the game to erase a five-point deficit in the final two minutes against their NE-10 rival.

Then it happened again in the final when Bentley rallied from 12 points down in the first half to earn a net-cutting celebration against Holy Family. Then again in the Elite Eight opener in San Antonio, Tex. last Tuesday when the Falcons were down 19 points with less than 13 minutes remaining in the national quarterfinals before completing their latest – and perhaps greatest – rally to knock off No. 1-ranked Wayne State (Neb.).
