Joyner, Marciniak Combine for 48 as C.W. Post Hands #1 Bentley 1st Loss, 85-71

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Senior guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and six-foot-one junior Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) combined for 48 points, more than five teams have scored against the Falcons this season, as C.W. Post knocked off Bentley University, the number one ranked team in Division II, in non-conference women's basketball Sunday afternoon at the Pratt Recreation Center.

Joyner finished with 27 points, including 15 in the first  11 minutes, and Marciniak added 21 as C.W. Post became only the second team to score as many as 60 points against the Bentley defense (and the first to exceed 66 points).

C.W. Post pushed its record to 7-4 with the victory while Bentley tasted defeat for the first time in ten games this season despite having first-half runs of 11-0 and 8-0.

Spoiled with the loss was a 26-point, nine-rebound, three-assist effort by Bentley sophomore forward Lauren Battista (North Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames HS).

The Falcons went into intermission on the short end of a 39-35 score, the first halftime deficit they've faced this season, after being outscored 12-2 over the final 4:40 of the half After opening a six-point lead at 33-27, Bentley scored on only one of its final 11 possessions of the first half, a dry spell that included seven turnovers.

It was a back-and-forth half with six lead changes, seven ties and both teams leading by at least six points at one juncture. The Pioneers started fast (14-6 over the first 5:30), Bentley put up runs of 11-0 and 8-0, and CWP had the momentum at the end of a half that saw the Falcons give the ball up a dozen times.

There would be no lead changes, or even ties, after play resumed as Bentley's dry spell continued. After Bentley sophomore forward Jacqui Brugliera (Fitchburg, Mass./Wachusett Reg. HS) scored the half's opening basket to bring her team within two, the Pioneers ran off nine in a row, a run capped by a Joyner basket, to stretch the lead to 11 at 48-37.

That 9-0 run grew into a larger 14-2 one, with C.W. Post opening up a 14-point advantage, 53-39.

Bentley, which had not trailed by more than nine points during its first nine games, trailed by 18 several times, the first at 66-48 when Joyner hit the first of two free throws with 7:45 left. Making things worse for the Falcons, Brugliera, the team's second-leading scorer for the season, fouled out on the play.

An 11-2 Bentley run, started and finished by baskets from junior forward Caleigh Crowell (Harwich, Mass./Worcester Academy), gave the Falcons hope of a comeback victory. That brought the visitors to within nine, 72-63 with 3:54 left.

However, Joyner answered with a quick jumper and Marciniak followed with a pair of free throws, restoring the differential to 13 less than 30 seconds later, 76-63.  Bentley never got closer than ten the rest of the way.

Battista achieved her 26 points despite uncharacteristically making only 10 of her 22 shots from the field. She did sink six of seven free throws and came within one rebound of a double-double.  Crowell followed with a career-best 10 points and five rebounds off the bench, and Goodwin also gave Bentley ten points in a non-starting role. Brugliera and junior guard Courtney Finn (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop HS) each finished with nine points for the Falcons.

Joyner was nine of 17 from the field and seven of 11 from the line, and also gave the Pioneers five rebounds and five assists. Marciniak, also nine of 17, provided eight rebounds, five assists and three steals in addition to the 21 points.

C.W. Post, scored 19 points off 20 Bentley turnovers and shot 49 percent overall. The Falcons made only 34 percent of their second half shots and finished at 39 percent overall. Outstanding foul shooting in the second half, 17 of 20, also helped CWP pull the upset.

Bentley, in the midst of five in a row on the road, will face unbeaten Dowling College Dec. 29 in the opening round of the Bridgeport Holiday Classic Dec. 29.
