Falcons to Fall to Shepherd and St. Thomas Aquinas on Day Two of Florida Trip

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Bentley softball team fell to Shepherd 3-0 and St. Thomas Aquinas 5-3 on the second day of its stint at the Spring Games in Florida.

 

Shepherd 3, Bentley 0

Falcons starting pitcher Taylor O'Brien and Shepherd starter Madelayne Ruffner each tossed two scoreless innings to start. But the Rams scored the only runs of the game in the top of the third on a three run home run by Alex Mantz.

The Falcons threatened in the bottom of the sixth after Ava Lanza walked and Jordan Krause singled to lead off the inning. But Ruffner retired the next three hitters in order to escape the jam.

Bentley again threatened in the bottom of the seventh by getting the first two hitters on base. Morgan Fraitzl reached and Katie Welch singled to put runners on first and second. But Ruffner again got three straight outs to escape the jam and seal the win for Shepherd.

 

Saint Thomas Aquinas 5, Bentley 3

In the second contest of the day, pitcher Riley Piromalli struck out 12 and tossed a complete game. On Sunday she was the winning pitcher in both games as the Falcons posted wins over Caldwell and Slippery Rock.

Trailing 4-1 in the top of the sixth with the bases loaded and no outs, a single by Kim Saunders scored Jacqueline Cupoli and Katie Welch to cut the deficit to 4-3.

The next batter Samanta Hess sacrificed the runners over for the first out of the inning. But Spartans pitcher Eliana Raposo escaped further damage got the final two outs of the inning without allowing any more runs.

The Spartans added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning and relief pitcher Sarah Clancy got the final three outs in the top of the seventh.
