Bentley Sweeps St. Michael’s, 8-7 & 4-3, To Break Single Season Win Record

WALTHAM, Mass. – After a walk-off double by freshman Jordan Krause (San Pedro, Calif./San Pedro HS) gave Bentley University an 8-7 win in the completion of a suspended game, the Falcons completed a sweep of St. Michael's College with a 4-3 game two victory in Northeast-10 Conference softball Thursday afternoon on the Bentley softball field.

The two wins in the final home games of the regular season boosted the Falcons to 23-17 for the season, breaking the school record of 21 wins set in 1989 and matched in 2009.  Coach Terry M. McDonough's team, 13-11 NE10, has won six of their last seven games.

The afternoon began with the continuation of a suspended game, which had Bentley leading 6-5 in the sixth when storms halted the contest April 9. The lead disappeared in the seventh on a two-run homer by Purple Knight freshman Jenna Devens (Parsippany, N.Y.), her tenth of the year.

Krause singled and scored the equalizer in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by senior catcher Ella Hillier (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin HS).

In the eighth, with junior right fielder Kylee Amato (Bergenfield, N.J./Acad. of the Holy Angels HS) on first, Krause doubled to left center, her fourth hit of contest. Amato raced home, easily scoring the walk-off run.

Krause, with her four hits, became the third player in program history to amass 50 hits in a season, joining Mary Jane Kelly (1989) and Karen Mishelof (1995).

In game two, with St. Michael's owning a 3-1 lead in the fifth, Hillier reached on an infield single with two outs. An error and a passed ball advanced Hillier to third and put junior first baseman Kaylee Mankins (North Attleboro/North Attleboro HS) on second. Graduate third baseman Kaileen Cain (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge HS) tied the game with a double to left, her 33rd and 34th RBI of the season. Freshman designated player Katie Welch (Monroe, Conn./Masuk HS) followed with a single to right, driving in pinch-runner Taylor O'Brien (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia HS) with what proved to be the game-winning run.

The win went to sophomore Payton Doiron (Beacon Falls, Conn./St. Joseph HS), who faced nine batters and retired them all in her three innings of relief. Doiron and freshman Dahlia Fink (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Notre Dame HS) combined to strike out 13 with Fink fanning eight in her four innings of work.

Bentley's eight hits, double St. Micharl's total, included two apiece by Hillier, Welch and junior center fielder Sam Petow (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury HS).

Bentley will wrap up the regular season Friday with a doubleheader at Stonehill College. First pitch is scheduled for 3 pm.
