Bentley Drops Two to Assumption; Hillier Reaches 100-Hit Milestone

WORCESTER, Mass. – Bentley University took a lead with five runs in the top of the seventh, but Assumption University answered with two in the bottom of the inning to claim a 6-5 game two victory and a sweep of a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader at Worcester State Thursday afternoon.

Assumption had taken the opener 9-3 after scoring four runs in the first and five in the second.

Bentley senior captain Ella Hillier (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin HS) achieved a milestone in game two as she became the 26th player in program history to amass 100 career hits. She reached that plateau with an infield single in the fifth.

Down 4-0 entering the final inning of game two, Bentley got on the board with an RBI double to left center by sophomore shortstop Sabrina Grizzaffi (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield HS). The inning continued with RBI singles by junior Sam Petow (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury HS) and sophomore Kylie Amato (Bergenfield, N.J./Acad. of the Holy Angels) making it a 4-3 game.

Two batters later, a two-run single by junior first baseman Kaylee Mankins (North Attleboro/Bishop Feehan HS) put Bentley in front, 6-5.

However, two errors and three singles in the bottom of the inning allowed Assumption (13-20, 10-6 NE) to score the tying and winning runs.

Bentley's ten hits included three by junior third baseman Jessica Trahan (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack HS) and two by Grizzaffi.

Sophomore Corin Mahan (Bridgewater) and freshman Mackenize Bruggerman (Abington) were a combined five-for-eight for Assumption and each drove in two runs.

All of Bentley's runs in the opener were scored in the second inning. Freshman left fielder Jordan Krause (San Pedro, Calif./San Pedro HS) had a two-run double to right and scored on an error.

Sophomore shortstop Summer Sheerin (Bridgewater) led Assumption with an RBI single in the first and a three-run homer in the second.

Bentley (16-16, 6-10 NE10) will be at home this weekend for doubleheaders against Southern Connecticut State Saturday and New Haven Sunday.
