Bentley Falls to Southern N.H. in NE10’s, 1-0, on Walk-Off Single

MANCHESTER, N.H. – A walk-off single by senior designated player Chloe Griffin (Scarborough, Maine) drove in senior second baseman Bryn Garczynski (Norwood, Mass.) and gave Southern New Hampshire University a 1-0 win over Bentley University in a Northeast Division first round game during the Northeast-10 Softball Championships Tuesday afternoon at the SNHU Softball Field.

After Bentley threatened in the top of the seventh, Garczynski led off the bottom of the inning with a single to center. She moved all the way to third when an attempted sacrifice fly was thrown away, and scored the game's only run on Griffin's single to center.

Both starting pitchers, Bentley freshman Payton Doiron (Beacon Falls, Conn./St. Joseph HE) and SNHU senior Olivia Strasser (Rutland, Mass.), were impressive all afternoon. Doiron, coming off a 1-0 one-hitter against Assumption last week, pitched the first five, allowing five hits and three walks while striking out one. Junior Elise Pereira (Plainville, Mass./King Philip Reg. HS) relieved her in the sixth and struck out three in that inning.

It was a seven-hit shutout for Strasser, who walked one and struck out two.

Bentley senior right fielder Lea Thompson (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull HS) ended the bottom of the second by throwing out a runner at the plate, with junior catcher Ella Hillier (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin HS) applying the tag.

In the top of the seventh, singles by freshman Sabrina Grizzaffi (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield HS) and senior Noelani Rivera (Clifton, N.J./Hawthorne Christian Acad.), with a sacrifice in between, gave Bentley runners on the court. But Strasser got out of trouble with a pair of ground ball outs.

Each team had one player with two hits, Rivera for the Falcons and Griffin for the Penmen (13-12).

Bentley finished its season at 9-16.
