Bentley Rides Doiron 1-Hitter to 1-0 Win & Split of Doubleheader

WALTHAM, Mass. – After pitching six and two-thirds no-hit innings, Bentley University freshman right-hander Payton Doiron (Beacon Falls, Conn./Beacon Falls HS) finished with a one-hitter as the Falcons blanked Assumption University, 1-0, in the second half of a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon on the Bentley softball field.

Doiron's first career shutout and fourth win of her rookie year gave the Falcons a split of the twinbill after the Greyhounds prevailed in the opener, 3-1.

Doiron was an out away from a no-hitter when Assumption freshman designated player Corin Mahan (Abington) hit a clean single to short center. She got the next batter to pop out to junior catcher Ella Hillier (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin HS) to complete the outstanding performance.

Doiron struck out six , including the side in the first inning, and retired the first 11 Hounds she faced. Six Assumption players reached base, with one hit, one error, one hit batter and three walks.

The only run of the game was scored in the bottom of the fourth. After sophomore first baseman Kaylee Mankins (North Attleboro/Bishop Feehan HS) tripled to right center, Hillier lined a single off the pitcher's shin, allowing freshman pinch-runner Samantha Hess (Nutley, N.J./Acad. of the Holy Angels) to score.

Assumption (11-9, 11-9 NE10) threatened in the sixth, but the inning ended  on an attempted double steal. After a throw to second, senior shortstop Noelani Rivera (Clifton, N.J./Hawthorne Christian Academy) threw home, Hillier made the play at the plate and sophomore center fielder Jordan Dwyer (Coventry, R.I.) was called out.

The visitors started fast in game one, scoring twice in the first inning and their other run in the third. Dwyer opened the game with a triple and scored on a single by senior designated player Brooke Murphy (Salem, N.H.. Later in the inning, an error made it a 2-0 game.

Senior shortstop Alyssa Beaton (Smithfield, R.I.), who scored the Hounds' second run, hit an inside the park home run to left in the third for the game's final run.

Bentley's only run was scored in the fourth. Mankins walked and later scored on a fielder's choice.

Freshman second baseman Sabrina Grizzaffi (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield HS) was 3-for-3 for Bentley and the Falcons also received two hits from graduate left fielder Stacey Korotsky (Raynham/Bridgewater-Raynham HS). Junior Elise Pereira (Plainville/King Philip Reg. HS) took the loss but pitched well, allowing five hits and fanning four in a complete-game effort.

The Falcons finished the regular season at 9-15 overall and conference. Next Tuesday, Bentley will play a quarterfinal playoff game on the road.
