Franklin Pierce Takes 2 From Bentley, 7-2 and 17-13; Game 2 Comeback Falls Short

RINDGE, N.H. – Home runs by junior catcher Allie Martinez (Upland, Calif.) in the opener and graduate third baseman Madi Killebrew (Dana Point, Calif.) in the nightcap propelled Franklin Pierce University to a doubleheader sweep of Bentley University, 7-2 and 17-13, in Northeast-10 Conference softball at the chilly Bisaccia Softball Complex Thursday afternoon.

In game one, Franklin Pierce (12-6, 11-5) scored in four straight innings and outhit the visitors 10-7 to gain the victory. Martinez had a two-run homer to center in the third, graduate right fielder Jess Rego (Richmond, R.I.) tripled in a run and later scored in the fourth and freshman designated player Ashley Cangiano (North Attleboro, Mass.) had a two-run single in the fifth.

Bentley's scoring came in the fifth inning. Following a walk to sophomore center fielder Sam Petow (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury HS) and an infield single by senior third baseman Lindsey Allen (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech HS), junior center Ella Hillier (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin HS) doubled to right center for two runs.

The Falcons' seven hits included two apiece for Allen and freshman designated player Kylee Amato (Bergenfield, N.J./Acad. of the Holy Angels HS).

The Ravens exploded out of the gate in game two, erupting for 11 runs in the bottom of the first. It was an inning that included eight hits for Franklin Pierce and four RBI by Killebrew. She had a two-run triple to open the scoring and a two-run homer later in the lengthy inning.

Bentley battled back, closing to within three at 15-12, with six runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and three in the sixth.

The fourth included a two-run single by sophomore first baseman Kaylee Mankins (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro HS) and a two-run double by Amato.

In the sixth, Mankins homered to center with graduate left fielder Stacey Korotsky (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater Raynham HS) and Hillier scoring ahead of her. The five RBI pushed her season total to a conference-leading 20.

Bentley's 15 hits included four by Mankins and three from Amato. Hillier was 2-for-4 and scored three times.

For Franklin Pierce, Killebrew led the way as she drove in six runs and scored twice.

Bentley, 7-11 overall and NE10, will be back home Saturday for Senior Day. The noon doubleheader will get underway at noon.
