Tough Afternoon for Bentley as St. Michael’s Sweep Falcons, 7-6 and 1-0

COLCHESTER, Vt. – A Bentley University comeback from five down fell short when St. Michael's College scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth to edge the visiting Falcons, 7-6, in Northeast-10 Conference softball Sunday afternoon at Doc Jacobs Field.

St. Michael's (3-5, 3-5 NE10) completed a sweep of the doubleheader with a 1-0 victory in game two.

The double loss halted Bentley's four-game winning streak and dropped the Falcons to 6-8 overall and NE10.

Bentley, down 6-1 after four innings, began its game-one comeback in the fifth with a single run. Sophomore first baseman Jordan Needle (Abington, Mass./Abington HS) singled down the left field line, and freshman pinch-runner Samantha Hess (Nutley, N.J./Acad. of the Holy Angels) scored on a triple to right center by senior catcher Lindsey Allen (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech HS).

In the seventh, down 6-2, Bentley loaded the bases with a single from sophomore center fielder Sam Petow (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury HS), an error and a single down the left field line by Allen. Petow scored on a passed ball and graduate left fielder Stacey Korotsky (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham HS) reached on an infield single, again loading the bases.

Freshman right fielder Kylee Amato (Bergenfield, N.J./Acad. of the Holy Angels) doubled to right, clearing the bases. That evened the score at 6-6 and sent the game to extra innings.

In the eighth, St. Michael's received back-to-back one-out singles by junior right fielder Leigh Brandenburg (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury HS) and sophomore Hope Hiscock (Schenectady, N.Y.). Brandenburg reached third on the play and scored the winning run on a throwing error.

Hits were at a premium during a game-two pitchers' duel between Bentley junior Elise Pereira (Plainville, Mass./King Philip Reg. HS) and St. Michael's sophomore righty Jackie Cherry (Franklin, Mass.) with each allowing only four hits. Pereira struck out eight and Cherry four

The only run of the game was scored in the first inning on an RBI double to center by freshman first baseman Grace Trautman (Waterford,Wis.). Bentley loaded the bases in the sixth before Cherry escaped with a strikeout.

Bentley will return to action Thursday with a doubleheader at Franklin Pierce.
