Record-Breaking Day for Mankins as Bentley Sweeps Stonehill, 8-6 and 8-0

EASTON, Mass. – Sophomore first baseman Kaylee Mankins (North Attleboro/Bishop Feehan HS) had an outstanding offensive afternoon Wednesday while leading the Bentley University softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Stonehill College, 8-6 (8 innings) and 8-0 (5 innings) in Northeast-10 Conference action on Father Gartland Field Wednesday.

Mankins, in the twinbill, was 6-for-8 with six RBI, four runs scored, two homers, two doubles, 14 total bases and a 1.750 slugging percentage.

In game two, she became the first player in program history to homer twice in a game and tied a 36-year-old school record for total bases in a game (10).

Game one became deadlocked at six when Stonehill senior catcher Michelle Theilgard (North Branford, Conn.) hit a two-run, two-out game-tying homer in the bottom of seventh.

Two of the Falcons' first three hitters in the eighth reached, sophomore second baseman Katherine Noftall (Ipswich/Ipswich HS) and senior third baseman Lindsay Allen (Worcester/Worcester Technical HS). With runners on the corners, graduate left fielder Stacey Korotsky (Raynham/ Bridgewater-Raynham HS) plated Noftall with the go-ahead run on a bunt single. Mankins added some insurance with a single to left scoring Allen.

Senior Lauren Calabrese (Cave Creek, Ariz./Boulder Creek HS) retired the Skyhawks (2-6, 1-3 NE10) in order in the bottom of the eighth to gain the victory.

Bentley, which totaled 15 hits, took an early lead with four runs in the top of the first and went up 5-4 on a leadoff home run by junior catcher Ella Hillier (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin HS) in the fifth. The Falcons (2-2, 2-2 NE10) picked up insurance in the seventh when Mankins scored on a single by senior right fielder Lea Thompson (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull HS).

Hillier, Mankins and Thompson each had three hits for Bentley in the opener.

In game two, freshman Payton Doiron (Beacon Falls, Conn./St. Joseph HS) and Calabrese combined on a six-hit shutout with Doiron earning her first collegiate victory. She scattered five singles in 3.1 innings and Calabrese retired all five batters she faced.

Mankins opened the scoring when she led off the second with a home run to center. The three-run inning also included a sacrifice fly by senior shortstop Noelani Rivera (Clifton, N.J./Hawthorne Christian Academy) and RBI single by sophomore center fielder Sam Petow (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury HS).

A two-run double by Mankins in the third made it 5-0 and the Falcons added two more runs in the fourth. Allen had an RBI single and Hillier did the same.

Mankins completed the game's scoring when she homered to lead off the fifth inning.

Bentley's nine hits included three by Mankins and two from Petow.

The Falcons will open their home schedule with home doubleheaders against Saint Anselm on Saturday and Monday. Per Northeast-10 Conference policies, no fans will be allowed.
