Franklin Pierce Takes 2 From Bentley, 6-5 and 8-0

RINDGE, N.H. – Franklin Pierce University scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the opener from Bentley University, 6-5, and completed the sweep with an 8-0 game-two victory in Northeast-10 Conference softball Saturday afternoon at the Bisaccia Softball Complex.

Franklin Pierce improved to 6-2 overall (5-1 NE10) while spoiling Bentley's first two games of 2021.

Bentley carried a 5-3 lead into the last of the seventh and started the frame with a strike out. The Raven rally began with a walk and a single. Senior Ashley Keegan (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic HS) came in from the bullpen and yielded an RBI single to freshman designated player Jenna Murray (Wilbraham, Mass.), making it a one-run game.

Junior catcher Allie Martinez (Upland, Calif.) doubled in the tying run and freshman right fielder Ashley Cangiano (North Attleboro, Mass.) singled up the middle, allowing Murray to walk-off with the game-winner.

Bentley scored its first run of the season in the third. Freshman designated player Kylee Amato (Bergenfield, N.J./Academy of the Holy Angels) led off with a single and was driven in on a double by junior shortstop Lindsey Allen (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech HS).

After the Ravens put up three in the bottom of the third, Bentley countered in the fifth when graduate student Kaileen Cain (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge HS) hit a three-run homer to center. It was the 11th career home run for the Caldwell University transfer.

The Falcons picked up an insurance run in the sixth when sophomore center fielder Sam Petow (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury HS) walked and scored on a ground out.

Both teams had 10 hits with Bentley receiving two apiece from Hillier and senior right fielder Lea Thompson (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull HS).

In game two, which was halted in the fifth by the mercy rule, senior Cyrena Zemaitis (Goshen, Conn.) authored a one-hitter and struck out seven for the Ravens. Franklin Pierce established control early with three runs in the second and four more in the third.

The bottom of the order carried the Raven offense with Martinez again a factor. She finished with two doubles and three RBI.

Bentley, 0-2 overall and in conference, will play a doubleheader at Stonehill Wednesday afternoon.
