Bentley Uses Long Ball to Gain Split with Stonehill

WALTHAM, Mass. – Freshman third baseman Noa Rivera (Clifton, N.J./Hawthorne Christian Acad.) had both a home run and a triple, and junior second baseman Julie Slavin (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill HS) also homered, as Bentley University defeated Stonehill College 7-1 in the second game of a Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division softball doubleheader on the Bentley softball field Wednesday afternoon.

The Falcon victory came after Stonehill took the opener in eight innings, 4-0, behind the five-hit shutout pitching of senior Jennifer Mayette (Scotia, N.Y.).

After being blanked in game one, Bentley scored in each of the first three frames of the nightcap. In the first, senior shortstop Catie Noons (North Dighton/Dighton-Rebohoth Reg. HS) hit a two-out double to right center and scored on a single to center by senior first baseman Jordan Ballantyne (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Arlington HS).

The second inning saw Bentley push its lead to 5-0 with four runs on five hits, including a lead-off triple by Rivera. Slavin singled her home and the Falcons also scored in the inning on an RBI single by sophomore left fielder Stacey Korotsky (Raynham/Bridgewater-Raynham Reg. HS) and a two-run single by Ballantyne.

Rivera led off the third with a home run to left, her second of the season, and the Falcons closed out the scoring with Slavin's homer in the fifth.

Ballantyne, Rivera and Slavin each accounted for two of Bentley's 10 hits with Ballantyne finishing with three RBI and Slavin two.

Freshman Ashley Keegan (Pittsfield/Taconic HS) earned her fifth win of the season with a complete game effort. She scattered six hits and struck out two.

The opener was a scoreless pitchers' duel between Mayette and Bentley freshman Lauren Calabrese (Cave Creek, Ariz./Boulder Creek HS) through seven innings. Calabrese carried a two-hitter into the eighth and finished with seven strikeouts in the hard-luck loss.

The first extra inning saw Skyhawk freshman  third baseman Michelle Theilgard (North Branford, Conn.) break the deadlock with a two-out two-run single to left. Junior second baseman Sophie Perez (Bridgewater) followed by driving in a pair with a double to left.

The split of the divisional twinbill left Bentley with records of 11-24 overall and 6-8 Northeast. Meanwhile, Stonehill left the field at 8-21 overall, including 5-6 division.

Bentley will play a three-game series at Saint Anselm this weekend, beginning with a single game Friday at 4 pm.
