Assumption Takes Two from Bentley, 5-3 & 4-0; Kennedy Moves Over .400

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior right-hander Kendal Roy (Grafton) pitched a seven-hit shutout in the opener and came back to save the nightcap as Assumption College swept Bentley University, 4-0 and 5-3, in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division softball Monday afternoon at Bentley.

Roy, who had also pitched a shutout against Bentley five days ago, walked one and struck out six in the first game while improving to 10-6 on the season. She stranded eight over the first five innings, including four in scoring position, before retiring the final seven Bentley players to step to the plate.

In game two, Roy came in for the final five outs and closed out the game with three straight strikeouts. She gave up a two-run single to Bentley senior left fielder Kelsey Kennedy (Bedford, N.H./ Bedford HS) after entering the game with the bases loaded and one out, but closed the door on the home team the rest of the way.

Kennedy had a big afternoon for the Falcons with two hits in each game raising her batting average 23 points to .411.

In game two, Assumption (13-11, 7-1 NE10 Northeast) received a three-run homerun from junior first baseman Stephanie Menard (Cranston, R.I.) that easily cleared the left field fence in the fifth. That pushed a two-run game to 5-0 and proved to be the difference after Bentley scored one in the bottom of the fifth and the afore-mentioned two in the sixth.

In the fifth, it was back-to-back triples by freshman shortstop Julie Slavin (Rocky Hill, Conn./ Rocky Hill HS) and senior designated player Chelsea Vena (Matawan, N.J./Saint John Vianney HS) that got the Falcons on the scoreboard. It was the second hit for Vena, who has six in her last four games.

The opener saw all the scoring come in the second inning with three of the four unearned as the result of a pair of errors. Senior left fielder Cassidy Colby (Charlton) had an RBI single and junior second baseman Nicole Duplease (Leominster) finished the scoring with an RBI double.

Junior second baseman Jordan Ballantyne (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Arlington HS) had two hits for Bentley (8-16, 2-7 NE10 Northeast), as did Vena and Kennedy.

Bentley received quality relief in both games from graduate student Hannah King (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk HS). She pitched a total of 7.2 scoreless innings, giving up only three hits and two walks while fanning three.

Next up for Bentley is a doubleheader at Stonehill College Wednesday afternoon.
