Bentley Comeback Bid Falls Short as Assumption Prevails, 4-3

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior shortstop Kayli Moniz (Fairhaven) drove in three runs, the first two on a first-inning home run, as Assumption College held off Bentley University, 4-3, in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division softball at Bentley Tuesday afternoon.

The Greyhounds (15-20, 12-6 NE-10 Northeast) maintained the lead from the third batter of the game on but saw Bentley climb back to within one after being down 2-0 and 4-1.

Junior center fielder Ashley Clark (Pawtucket, R.I.) was hit by a pitch to start the game and was immediately sacrificed into scoring position. Moniz followed with her fifth home run of the year, clearing the left field fence to make it a quick 2-0 lead.

Bentley (12-19, 8-9 Northeast) got one back in the fourth when senior shortstop Alex Borrelli (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic HS) tripled to center and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior designated player Kelsey Smith (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant HS).

Both teams scored twice in the fifth inning. Moniz had an RBI single for the Hounds and later scored on an outfield error. Bentley bounced back with an RBI double by sophomore second baseman Catie Noons (North Dighton/Dighton-Rehoboth Reg. HS) and an RBI single by junior left fielder Kelsey Kennedy (Bedford, N.H./Bedford HS).

Down one, Bentley had one runner in both of the final two innings but was unable to pick up the tying run.

The Falcons' eight hits included a 3-for-3 afternoon by Borrelli and two by Noons. On the other side of the ledger, Moniz was among three Assumption players who had two hits in the contest.

Bentley will play its final home game of 2016 Wednesday afternoon, a 3 pm encounter with St. Michael's College.
