Stonehill Uses 3-Run 5th to Overtake Bentley, 4-2; Borrelli Homers for Falcons

EASTON, Mass. – Bentley University senior shortstop Alex Borrelli (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic HS) hit her first career home run but Stonehill College answered with a three-run fifth inning to register a 4-2 win over the visiting Falcons in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division softball Sunday afternoon at Gartland Field.

Borrelli's home run to left center broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning. Bentley had tied the game two innings earlier when junior center fielder Chelsea Vena (Matawan, N.J./Saint John Vianney HS) led off with a single to right and scored on a single to left by senior catcher Jill Raia (Montville, N.J./ Morristown-Beard School).

Only one ball, a lead-off single by senior center fielder Lauren Esposito (Middlefield, Conn.), left the infield during the three-run fifth. She was sacrificed to second, moved to third on an infield single by junior right fielder Liana Jordan (Staten Island, N.Y.) and scored on a bunt single by junior left fielder/pitcher Michelle Carbone (Deer Park, N.Y.). Later in the inning, Jordan scored from third on a dropped third strike and senior second baseman Alison Sumski (Amherst, N.H.) scored on a wild pitch.

Carbone earned the win, her fifth in seven decisions, with four innings of one-out shutout relief.  She walked one and struck out two while helping Stonehill improve to 19-16 overall and 11-6 division.

Vena and Borrelli each had two hits for Bentley, which dropped to 12-18 overall and 8-8 Northeast.

Bentley will host Assumption in a single game Tuesday at 3 pm.
