Assumption Rallies from 5 Down to Sweep Bentley, 3-0 and 8-5

WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore righty Kendal Roy (Grafton) pitched a six-hit shutout in the opener and her teammates battled back from a 5-0 deficit to take the nightcap as Assumption College swept Bentley University, 3-0 and 8-5, in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division softball Wednesday afternoon at Marois Field.

Game two got off to a positive start for the Falcons with four runs, all unearned, in the first inning and another in the third.  The opening inning included a two-run single by senior first baseman Morgan Mazone (Selkirk, N.Y./Bethlehem Central HS) and an RBI single by sophomore catcher Natalie Tarantino (Arlington/Arlington HS).

In the third, junior center fielder Chelsea Vena (Matawan, N.J./Saint John Vianney HS) made it 5-0 with her first career home run.

The roof fell in for the Falcons in the fifth when Assumption turned four extra base hits, a hit batter and three walks into seven runs. Big blows included a two-run homer by senior right fielder Christina Caira (Newton) and a two-run double by senior shortstop Kayli Moniz (Fairhaven).

Two more doubles added another run to Assumption's total in the sixth with junior center fielder Ashley Clark (Pawtucket, R.I.) producing the RBI.

Junior left fielder Kelsey Kennedy (Bedford, N.H./Bedford HS) had three of Bentley's eight hits in the nightcap.

In game one, Roy struck out two and allowed only two runners to reach second, including senior catcher Jill Raia (Montville, N.J./Morristown-Beard School) on a seventh-inning double.

Roy received more than enough support when the Hounds scored twice in the first inning. Junior second baseman Ashley Abad (Bedford, N.H.) drove in the first with a single and later scored on the front end of a double-steal attempt.

Assumption improved to 8-5 in the division and 11-19 overall while Bentley slipped to 10-14 overall and 6-5 Northeast.

Bentley will be back at home Thursday afternoon for a 3 pm doubleheader against Merrimack College.
