Bentley Rallies for 10-Inning Win over Millersville; Falcons Also Fall to SW Minnesota State

CLERMONT, Fla. – Down three entering the bottom of the seventh, the Bentley University softball team battled back to force extra innings and went on to earn a 7-6 10-inning victory over Millersville University in non-conference college softball at the National Training Center on Sunday.

In the team's second game of the day, the Falcons dropped a 3-1 decision to Southwest Minnesota State.

In the game one win, senior left fielder Shannon Connor (West Haven, Conn./West Haven HS) had three of Bentley's ten hits, junior lefty Kelly Ferris (Seymour, Conn./Seymour HS) struck out a career-high nine in 6.1 innings of relief and sophomore third baseman Katelyn Lebreux (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford HS) scored twice, including the game-winner.

With the international tie-breaker in effect and Bentley down one after the Marauders (3-4) picked up a go-ahead run in the top of the tenth, Ferris began the bottom of the tenth on second. She was sacrificed to second and consecutive walks to Lebreux and sophomore center fielder Kelsey Kennedy (Bedford, N.H./Bedford HS) loaded the bases.

Following a fly ball for out number two, an error by the third baseman on a potential game-ending play allowed Ferris to score the tying run. Junior first baseman Morgan Mazone (Selkirk, N.Y./ Bethlehem Central HS) followed with a single up the middle, bringing in Lebreux with the walk-off run.

Bentley went into the bottom of the seventh down 4-1 but three Millersville errors helped the Falcons rally. Lebreux got it started with a single up the middle and was sacrificed to second. An error, an infield single by Connor and another error allowed her to score, and another Millersville miscue brought in sophomore right fielder Chelsea Vena (Matawan, N.J./Saint John Vianney) with Bentley's third run. Connor scored the tying run on a single to right by freshman second baseman Catie Noons (North Dighton, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth HS). The Falcons still had the bases loaded with only one out, but Millersville escaped further trouble with a strikeout and a line out.

Both teams picked up a run in the eighth with the Falcons scoring on an RBI single by Connor.

In the second game of the day, the Falcons (1-2) fell behind early as Southwest Minnesota (4-3) scored three times in the first two innings and could never catch up. Sophomore righty Alex O'Connor (Bloomington, Minn.) turned in a three-hitter with six strikeouts for the Mustangs, and sophomore righty Carinn Burns (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk HS) was solid in her first collegiate pitching performance for Bentley. She scattered six hits and allowed just one walk.

Bentley scored its only run in the sixth inning. Junior Natalie Tarantino (Arlington, Mass./ Arlington HS) led off with an infield single, was sacrificed to second and scored on a two-out double to center by Vena.

The trip to Florida will continue Monday with morning games against Concordia-St. Paul (9 am) and Northern State (11 am).
