McDonough Drives in 4 as Bentley Takes Down West Liberty, 6-2

WALTHAM, Mass. – Graduate student Laura McDonough (Braintree, Mass./Braintree HS) drove in four runs to lead Bentley University to a 6-2 win over West Liberty University in non-conference college softball Tuesday morning at the National Training Center.

McDonough, a second baseman, had a two-run triple to right in the first after singles by junior left fielder Shannon Connor (West Haven, Conn./West Haven HS) and freshman designated player Chelsea Vena (Matawan, N.J./Saint John Vianney HS) set the table.

McDonough added a sacrifice fly in the fourth and drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run in the fifth. She also walked in the second inning and handled seven chances in the field without an error.

Vena, who lifted her average to .533 after her first six collegiate games, had three against the 4-5 Hilltoppers, and also finished with a run scored, an RBI and three stolen bases.

Bentley also received two hits and two runs scored from Connor and freshman right fielder Liane Ferullo (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop HS).

Sophomore Halley McDevitt (San Ramon, Calif./San Ramon Valley HS) earned the win for the Falcons after scattering seven hits and allowing one earned run in five innings of work. Classmate Kelly Ferris (Seymour, Conn./Seymour HS) came on for the final two innings, retiring all six batters she faced with two strikeouts.

Bentley, 2-4 thus far on a ten-game trip to Florida, will face Bridgeport and Alderson-Broaddus on Thursday afternoon.
