Betz Named Northeast-10 Softball Pitcher of the Week

WALTHAM, Mass. – After coming within two outs of a perfect game on Sunday, Bentley University sophomore Caitlin Betz (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) has been named the Softball Pitcher of the Week in the Northeast-10 Conference.

Betz took to the center circle twice last week and couldn't have been much better. She didn't allow a run in a pair of complete game victories and limited opposing batters to a microscopic .105 batting average.

After a three-hit shutout of Franklin Pierce on Thursday, Betz retired the first 19 batters she faced Sunday against Southern New Hampshire, a team that was in first place in the NE-10's Northeast Division at the time and is one of four conference teams with a batting average over .300.

The bid for perfection ended with a one-out single just barely out of the reach of the second baseman, and Betz finished with a two-hitter and a second straight 2-0 shutout.

Betz, who extended her personal winning streak to three on Monday with a 5-4 victory over Southern New Hampshire in eight innings, is a team-best 5-4 with a 3.44 ERA in 13 appearances. Before giving up a run to SNHU in the sixth Monday, she strung together 21.1 consecutive scoreless innings over a four-game span.

This week's Northeast-10 Weekly Honor Roll included Bentley senior second baseman Laura McDonough (Braintree/Braintree HS), who hit .429 with four RBI, two runs scored, a sacrifice fly and a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in 17 chances.

Bentley, 13-24 overall, is back in action Wednesday with a 3 pm home doubleheader against UMass-Lowell.
