Panarelli, Ferraro Power UMass-Lowell to Sweep of Bentley, 11-0 and 7-1

LOWELL, Mass. – Senior catcher Lindsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury) had four hits, including two homers, and seven RBI, and sophomore third baseman Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y.) was four-for-six with four RBI in the doubleheader, as UMass-Lowell swept Bentley University, 11-0 and 7-1, in Northeast-10 Conference women's softball Wednesday afternoon at River View Field.

Panarelli was instrumental in giving her team the early lead in the second inning of both games.  In the opener, she was hit by a pitch, advanced on an error and scored on Ferraro's RBI single to left.  Game two saw her stake the River Hawks to a 1-0 lead with a home run to left.

In between, she ended the opening game in the bottom of the sixth when she drilled a grand slam over the center field fence to invoke the eight-run rule.

UMass-Lowell (15-7, 5-3 NE-10), had broken game one open with a six-run third inning that featured Ferraro.  She had a two-run double to make it 5-0 and stole home for her team's sixth run of the game.

In game two, a two-run double by junior second baseman Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich) made it 3-0 and Lowell pulled away with four runs in the sixth.

Bentley's only run of the afternoon came in its final at bat. Freshman shortstop Shannon Connor (West Haven, Conn./West Haven HS) doubled to left, took third on an error and scored on a single by sophomore first baseman Samantha Tierney (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketchum HS).

Connor and Tierney both had three hits in the doubleheader, including two apiece in the opener.

Freshman Courtney Lanfranchi (Burlington) authored the six-hit shutout in game one for her fifth win of the season, and senior Elyssa Boris (Gardner) matched her in hits allowed in the nightcap while posting her 10th victory.

Bentley, 3-13 overall and 1-7 NE-10, remains on the road this weekend with doubleheaders at Adelphi University Saturday and Pace University Sunday.
