Furtado Drives in 5 as Franklin Pierce Takes Two from Bentley

RINDGE, N.H. -- Junior Jessica Furtado (Laconia, N.H.) drove in five runs, including two on a game one home run, as Franklin Pierce University swept Bentley University, 10-2 and 3-0, in Northeast-10 Conference softball Monday afternoon at the FPU Softball Field.

The Ravens  pounded out 16 hits in the opener, enjoying two big innings before the game was halted by the eight-run rule with two outs in the sixth. They took control with a five-run fourth that made it a 6-0 game and locked up the win with four runs in the sixth.

Junior right fielder Megan Bird (Laconia, N.H.) was instrumental in the fourth for Franklin Pierce, scoring two batters after her two-run single made it a 4-0 game.  She finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI.

In the sixth, Furtado's homer to left make it an 8-2 game, and later in the inning, a two-run single by senior left fielder Rachel Baxter (Cumberland, R.I.) put an end to the game. It was the third hit of the game for Baxter, who also scored twice.

Freshman Kaitlyn Johnson (New Boston, N.H.) posted the win for the Ravens after giving up six hits and four walks in her six innings of work.

Junior second baseman Laura McDonough (Braintree, Mass./Braintree HS) was involved in both Bentley runs. She had an RBI triple to right in the fifth, her second hit of the afternoon, and scored on a ground ball to short.

In game two, Franklin Pierce junior Rachel Allen (Hull, Mass.) limited Bentley to two hits, including a seventh-inning triple to right by sophomore first baseman Samantha Tierney (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./ Roy C. Ketchum HS). Allen struck out eight and yielded only one walk.

The Ravens (7-8, 5-1 NE-10) picked up an unearned run in the second with sophomore second baseman Jamie Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) scoring on a squeeze play after a throwing error on a steal play enabled her to reach third base.

A two-out rally for FPU was capped by a two-run triple to right by Furtado making it a three-run differential.

Bentley, 3-11 overall and 1-5 NE-10, remains on the road for a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader at UMass-Lowell.
