WALTHAM, Mass. -- Freshman third baseman Hannah Byrne (Lynn) had five RBI in game one and a total of five hits, and freshman Alexis Bogdanovich (South Portland, Maine) provided 4.1 innings of quality relief in the nightcap as Saint Anselm College swept Bentley University, 9-1 and 7-4, in Northeast-10 Conference softball Sunday afternoon. The first game was halted after six innings.

Saint Anselm (9-13, 3-3 NE-10) wasted no time taking control in the opener, erupting for five unearned runs in the top of the first inning. Following RBI singles by Byrne and senior Mary Fay (Stoughton), sophomore Olivia Story (Middleton) broke things open with a bases-clearing three-run double to left field.

In the fourth, it was Byrne's turn to clear the bases as she drove in three with a double to left, making it an 8-0 game.

Bentley's only run in the game came in the bottom of the fourth when freshman right fielder Shannon Connor (West Haven, Conn./West Haven HS) led off with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly hit by sophomore first baseman Samantha Tierney (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketchum HS).

Connor and junior left fielder Erica Thibodeau (Cohoes, N.Y./Shaker HS) each had two hits for the Falcons, who were out-hit 12-7.

Bentley started fast in the nightcap, with two runs in the first and one more in the second producing a 3-0 lead.  In the first, freshman designated player Alyssa Wagner (Suffield, Conn./Suffield HS) had an RBI triple and scored on the front end of a double steal.  She was also involved in the second-inning run, with her single to right center driving in Tierney.

A three-run fourth for Saint Anselm was capped by a sacrifice fly by Fay that scored sophomore Cara Crowley (Lynn) with the tying run. An inning later, two Falcon errors led to two unearned runs, putting the visitors up 5-3.

Bentley got one back in the bottom of the fifth on a Tierney sacrifice fly, but single runs by the Hawks in the final two innings completed the scoring.  The seventh inning run came via a leadoff homer by sophomore Nicole Boucher (Woonsocket, R.I.).

Bogdanovich earned the win after yielding only one hit and two walks in her four-plus innings of work.  She struck out five of the 16 batters she faced.

Wagner accounted for half of Bentley's four hits in the game.

Bentley (3-9, 1-3 NE-10) plays a Northeast-10 doubleheader at Franklin Pierce Monday afternoon.
