Bentley Drops a Pair During Day 2 of Florida Trip

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Bentley University softball team came up short twice on Monday as the Falcons were blanked by nationally-ranked Winona State, 5-0, and dropped a 4-3 decision to Alderson-Broaddus College on a walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh.

In the first game, senior pitcher Stacey Struzynski (Homewood, Ill.) ran her record to 9-0 on the season with a one-hit shutout for Division II's 12th-ranked team. She walked two and struck out 16 of the 24 batters she faced.

The 15-1 Warriors staked her to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a lead-off home run to center by freshman designated player Morgan Lintz (Bettendorf, Iowa). Winona added two more in the third on an RBI double by senior catcher Kathy Crudo (Stacy, Minn.) and a run-producing single by Lintz.

A two-run single by senior first baseman Molly Link (Holy Cross, Iowa) in the fourth capped the scoring.

The lone Bentley hit came in the fourth, a double to left by junior catcher Erica Thibodeau (Cohoes, N.Y./Shaker HS), her third extra base hit in the season's first two games.

A walk-off homer by winning pitcher Kat Powell (Miami, Fla.) did Bentley in in game two of the day. From the center circle, she scattered eight hits and fanned nine in a complete game effort.

Bentley, which trailed 3-0 after three, battled back with two in the sixth and one in the seventh to even the game at 3-3. The sixth inning featured an RBI single by sophomore first baseman Samantha Tierney (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketchum HS), with the second run scoring on an error.

Junior center fielder Stephanie Kasson (Hyde Park, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt HS) led off the seventh with a single, advanced on an error and a sacrifice, and scored on a single by sophomore third baseman Kelly Sanborn (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton HS).

Sanborn, Kasson and freshman shortstop Shannon Connor (West Haven, Conn./West Haven HS) each had two hits for the Falcons.

Bentley, 1-2, will take on Philadelphia University Tuesday at 11 am in game four of its trip.
