Bentley Cross Country Runs to 30th Place Finish at NCAA Championships

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Led by junior Graham Chapski (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich HS) and senior Nik Haas (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey HS), the Bentley University Falcons finished 30th among 32 teams at the NCAA Division II Men's Cross Country Championships Saturday morning at The Abbey Course.

"We came out of the regional meet a little beat up, We were hoping for a top 25 finish but injuries hurt our chances," said coach Kevin Curtin. "Graham and Nik were as solid as they were all season, but it wasn't enough."

Bentley finished with a team score of 792, finishing ahead of Queens (N.C.) and Concord (W.V.).

Chapski was 149th overall, covering the 10,000-meter course in 33:02.9. After being in 198th a third of the way into the race, he moved up at each of the final six checkpoints to crack the top 150.

Haas climbed 31 places over the final 6.7 kilometers and finished 162nd in 33:15.2.

Also scoring for Bentley were senior Eric Alatalo (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington HS) in 176th (33:33.5), senior Tim Bolick (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton HS) (34:03.6) and junior Seamus Higgins (Randolph, N.J./Randolph HS) in 214th (34:25.0).

Vincent Kiprop of Missouri Southern was the individual champion, winning by 28.9 seconds over Shorter's Alfred Chelanga in 29:07.4. The team championship went to Adams State, 54-79 over Grand Valley State.
