Capobianco Turns in Winning Performance during Merrimack Invitational

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Competing only about eight miles from his home, freshman Sam Capobianco (North Reading/Phillips Andover) provided the Bentley University men's track and field team with its only victory Saturday during the Merrimack University Track and Field Carnival.

Capobianco broke the tape in the mile with his time of 4:22.13 giving him a winning margin of 2.15 seconds over runner-up Connor Hughes (Stonehill). On the Northeast-10 Conference performance list, it was good for ninth in the 1500 meters with a converted time of 4:22.13.

In the 3000 meter steeplechase, junior Nick Ondr (Ozark, Mo./Glendale HS) moved to fifth on the NE10 performance and finished third with a 10:26.38. That improved on his personal best by 15.26 seconds.

Other members of the team were on the opposite coast, competing in the Triton Invitational at UC San Diego. One of the highlights out west came in the 1500 with junior Brice Tolan (Abington/ Abington HS) running the 1500 in 3:57.17. That bettered his PR by 6.74 seconds, moved him to fourth on the NE10 list, elevated him to tenth on the program's all-time list, and was good for 10th in a field of 47.

Also in San Diego, junior Jack Deehan (Westwood/Westwood HS) climbed to fourth in the NE10 in the 800 with his 1:57.12 placing him 16th among 42 competitors. Freshman Alex Lawes (Brick, N.J./Brick Township HS) was fifth of 15 in the 400 hurdles, finishing in 56.89 seconds.

Returning to Merrimack, third-place finishes were achieved by senior Devin Wendel (Westfield, N.J./Westfield HS) in the 400 (53.48) and sophomore Evan Bean (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa HS) in the 400 hurdles (1:00.47).

Bentley's next meet is the Southern New Hampshire Invitational next Saturday.
