Capobianco, Lawes Lead Bentley Men During Black & Gold Invitational

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Two freshmen, Sam Capobianco (North Reading, Mass./North Reading HS) and Alex Lawes (Brick, N.J./Brick Township HS), led the Bentley University men's track and field team at Bryant University's Black and Gold Invitational Saturday.

Capobianco, in his first outdoor 5,000 meter race, finished second among 18 runners with his 15:27.41 good for fifth on the Northeast-10 Conference performance list.

Lawes was third of 16 in the 400 hurdles, finishing in 56.15 seconds. It was good for third on the season's NE10 performance list and elevated him to third on Bentley's all-time list.

Lawes was also part of Bentley's 4x400 relay team that finished in 3:28.97 and moved to fourth on the conference performance list. That quartet also included sophomore Evan Bean (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa HS), junior Jack Deehan (Westwood, Mass./Westwood HS) and sophomore Matthew Chicko (North Andover, Mass./North Andover HS).

Also in the 400 hurdles, Bean was eighth of 16 with his 1:00.05 good for seventh on the NE10 list.

Deehan and Chicko both established new personal bests in the 400 while finishing 15th and 19th, respectively. The times were 52.39 and 53.08.

In the 800, junior Brice Tolan (Abington, Mass./Abington HS) was eighth among 30 runners. His time of 1:57.52 was a new PR and put him at fourth on the NE10 performance list.

In the team standings, Bentley was 10th among 13 teams with a score of 26 in the predominantly Division I meet.

Next Saturday, Bentley will have some athletes participate in the Triton Invitational at UC-San Diego and the rest will be in a triangular at Merrimack College.
