Higgins & Sihvonen Earn Victories at Stonehill; Bentley 2nd in Team Standings

EASTON, Mass. – Juniors Seamus Higgins (Randolph, N.J./Randolph HS) and Holt Sihvonen (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial HS) turned in winning performances while helping the Bentley University men's outdoor track and field team finish second among ten teams in the Stonehill Skyhawk Invitational Saturday at the W.B. Mason Stadium.

Bentley totaled 117 points to trail only the host Skyhawks' 146.5. Assumption College (107.5) and Holy Cross (83) were third and fourth, respectively.

Higgins and sophomore Cody Murphy (Dunbarton, N.H./Goffstown HS) went 1-2 in the rarely-contested 3,000 meter run. Higgins finished in 9:10.03 and Murphy followed him across the finish line 4.72 seconds later.

Sihvonen prevailed in the javelin for the second time this spring with his throw of 185'11" a dozen feet better than the runner-up, Jake Fogarty of Merrimack.

Senior Tim Bolick (Hopkinton/Hopkinton HS) took second in the 800 with his 1:52.51 a new personal best by 2.29 seconds.  It moved him to fourth on Bentley's all-time list and to third on the season's Northeast-10 Conference performance list.

Also earning seconds were senior Eric Alatalo (Wilmington/Wilmington HS) in the 5,000 (16:09.91) and junior David Hernandez (Tokyo, Japan) in the high jump, his 5'11.25" a new PR by four-and-a-quarter inches.

Hernandez also moved to ninth in program history and sixth in the NE10 this year with a distance of 21'10" in the long jump. He was fourth of 13 in the meet and improved on his previous best by ten inches. In addition, he cracked Bentley's top ten in the discus while finishing sixth of 15 with a throw of 123'5", an improvement by nine-and-a-half inches.

Other fourth-place finishes were achieved by senior Rupak Mehta (Howell, N.J./Howell HS) in the 5,000 (16:31.50) and freshman Josh Gettings (Lowell/Lowell HS) in the 400 meter hurdles (57.47). Junior Nick Skarin (Sunapee, N.H./Sunapee HS) registered a fifth-place showing in the 400 (51.24), as did senior Beau Kraft (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point HS) in the shot put. His throw of 44'6", a season-best, moved him to seventh on the conference list.

Among Bentley's sixth-place finishers was senior Nik Haas (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey HS) with a time of 3:58.93 in the 1500.

Bentley will return to Stonehill Friday and Saturday for the Northeast-10 Conference Championships.
