WALTHAM,  Mass. – Competing on the other side of town at Brandeis University's Gosman Center, the Bentley University men's indoor track and field team received first-place finishes from Tim Bolick (Hopkinton/Hopkinton HS), Ben Edwards (Morristown, N.J./Morristown HS) and Nik Haas (Ramsey, N.J//Ramsey HS) during Saturday's Reggie Poyau Memorial.

Their efforts helped Bentley finish second in the seven-team meet with a total of 71 points. The University of Southern Maine took first with a 158, and the Falcons edged out Merrimack College (70), Brandeis (70) and Fitchburg State (66).

Bolick won his event by the slimmest of margins as he and Southern Maine's Hany Ramadan both posted times of 1:58.21. When the times were extended one more place, it was Bolick who had the edge, by one-thousandth of a second. It improved on his personal best by 2.22 seconds and was the sixth best in the Northeast-10 Conference so far this season. Also in the 800, freshman Michael Cannata (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional HS) was fourth of 14 (2:03.63).

Edwards ran to victory in the mile, his 4:27.63 exactly two seconds faster than runner-up Brian Amaral of Fitchburg State. Also scoring for Bentley in the event were sophomore Seamus Higgins (Randolph, N.J./Randolph HS) and junior Graham Chapski (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich HS). Higgins was third (4:32.01) and Chapski followed in fifth (4:34.83).

Haas notched the NE10's third best time of the year while placing first of 21 in the 3,000 meters, his time of 8:46.02 a PR by 8.44 seconds. Senior Erik Alatalo (Wilmington/Wilmington HS) just missed scoring in the event, placing seventh in 9:07.44.

Senior David Hernandez (Tokyo, Japan), in his collegiate track debut, was second of 12 in the long jump, clearing 21 feet, 1.5 inches. He was also ninth of 25 in the 55 meters (6.92) and tenth of 29 in the 200 (24.65).

Bentley had three fourth-place finishes in field events achieved  by freshmen. Those were turned in by Alex Arnold (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) in the long jump (20'1.5"), Andrew Shortall (Plymouth/ Plymouth South HS) in the triple jump (40'2.25") and sophomore Michael Carpino (Mansfield/ Mansfield HS) in the shot put (40'5.5"). Arnold's day also included seventh of 29 in the 200 (24.32) and eighth of 25 in the 55 (6.87).

Sophomore Ryan Kenney (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta Sperry) was fourth of 16 in the 400 (53.04), and freshman Tristan Leachman (Falmouth/Falmouth HS) had a solid day, placing sixth of 29 in the 200 (23.98) and seventh of 25 in the 55 (6.85).

Next Sunday, Bentley will be at Harvard for the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational.
