Nee & Haas Post Wins at UMass-Boston; Dupray Breaks Record in Weight Throw

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Sean Nee (West Yarmouth/Dennis-Yarmouth Reg. HS) and junior Nik Haas (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey HS) turned in winning efforts as the Bentley University men's indoor track team opened its season Saturday with the UMass-Boston Indoor Invitational at the Reggie Lewis Center.

Nee broke the meet record by 2.17 seconds with a winning time of 2:31.86 in the 1000 meters, finishing 1.27 seconds before runner-up Duncan Burleigh (Stonehill).  Bentley freshman Daniel Hergott (Wallingford, Conn./Xavier HS) followed in third with a 2:39.02.

Haas was the first of 30 runners in the 3000 meters to reach the finish line with his 8:54.46 establishing a new personal best.  He had a winning margin of 3.30 seconds over the closest challenger, Jake Hastings (Fitchburg State). Bentley sophomore Graham Chapski (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich HS) took fifth in 9:00.31.

Senior captain Wes Dupray (Rowley/St. John's Prep) broke the school record in the weight throw by nearly two feet with his throw of 43'1.5" putting sixth in a field of 37. The former standard of 41'3.25" had been set in the same building nearly five years ago by Steven Long

Bentley had four of the top nine finishers in the 5,000 meters with sophomores Ryan Cadorette (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) and Seamus Higgins (Randolph, N.J./Randolph HS) third and fourth, respectively. Cadorette, first among collegians, finished in 15:16.14, 12th best in program history, and Higgins 15:17.21, 13th best. Junior Erik Alatalo (Wilmington/Wilmington HS) was eighth of 28 in 15:34.35 and freshman Cody Murphy (Dunbarton, N.H./Goffstown HS) followed in 15:44.50.

Bentley picked up a fourth-place finish, out of 18, in the 4x400 relay with sophomore Nick Skarin (Sunapee, N.H./Sunapee HS) combining with grad student Steve Maffiolini (Southington, Conn./Southington HS), freshman Anthony Giesing (Bradford, Vt./Oxbow HS) and junior David Stoffel (Luxenbourg) for a 3:30.97.

Maffiolini and Skarin also finished fourth and fifth, respectively, among 29 runners in the 600 meters. Maffiolini's 1:24.18 was second on the Falcons' all-time list and Skarin's 1:24.77 was good for number three. Also in the 600, junior Michael Bitto (North Reading/North Reading HS) was seventh in 1:27.39, tenth all-time for a Falcon.

Others who finished in the top third of their event were Stoffel in the 200 (15th of 97, 23.54), senior Connor Hichens (Sharon/Sharon HS) in the 400 (15th of 49, 53.67), senior Anthony Lacey (Ogdensburg, N.J./Pope John XXIII HS) in the mile (9th of 43, 4:38.57), junior Greg Karpacz (Wayland/ Wayland HS) in the mile (14th of 43, 4:41.79) and sophomore Beau Kraft (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport- Blue Point HS) in the shot (13th of 51, 40'4").

There were no team scores in the meet.

Bentley's next meet is the Elm City Classic at Southern Connecticut State Thursday and Friday.
