Uthman-Olukokun Excels during Harvard Invitational; Powell Establishes Record at Tufts

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sophomore Edy-Elliot Uthman-Olukokun (West Warwick, R.I./West Warwick HS) had the top finishes for the Bentley University men's indoor track and field team during Saturday's Harvard Invitational at the Gordon Track and Tennis Center.

Uthman was third of 19 in the long jump with a distance of 20 feet, 9 inches, and his time of 22.69 seconds in the 200 meters put him fourth in a field of 49. He also combined with classmate Sean Nee (West Yarmouth/Dennis-Yarmouth Reg. HS) and a pair of juniors, Christian Connolly (Kingston/ Silver Lake Reg. HS) and Steve Maffiolini (Southington, Conn./Southington HS), for a time of 3:28.87 in the 4x440 yard relay, good for second place behind UMass.

Uthman wasn't the only Falcon to compete in multiple events over the weekend as freshman Matt Powell (Charlton/St. John's Shrewsbury HS) became the first athlete in Bentley history to compete in the indoor pentathlon. He finished fifth of nine in the event at the Tufts Stampede at the Gantcher Center in Medford with a score of 3,935 points.

During the two days, Powell was second among the heptathletes in the pole vault (10'6"), third in the long jump (19'11.5") and fourth in both the high jump (5'8.75") and the 60 meter hurdles (9.62 seconds). His highest point total, 694, came with a time of 7.56 seconds in the 60 meters.

Back at Harvard, Nee set a new personal best in the mile by about five seconds with his time of 4:23.49 putting him eighth out of 39. Connolly set a PR in the 800 meters (1:59.39) while finishing ninth of 36, and Maffiolini did the same in the 200, finishing 11th of 49 in 23.42 seconds.

Junior Anthony Charter (Hubbardston/Quabbin Reg.  HS) had a pair of top seven finishes as he was sixth of 19 in the long jump (20'5.25") and seventh of 12 in the triple jump (41'9.75").

Other highlights included freshman Tim Bolick (Hopkinton/Hopkinton HS) finishing 13th in the 800 meters (2:00.43) and classmate Eric Beckwith (North Attleboro/North Attleboro HS) placing 10th in the weight throw (31'7.25") and 12th in the shot (44'7.5"). His performance in the weight elevated him to third on Bentley's all-time list.

Next Saturday, Bentley will compete in the Boston University Valentine's Invitational.
