Kennedy Breaks School Record in 300 Meters

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Eric Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn./Northwest Catholic HS) broke a 13-year-old school record in the 300 meters while competing for the Bentley University men's indoor track team during Sunday's Greater Boston Track Club Invitational at Harvard University's Gordon Track and Tennis Center.

Kennedy posted a time of 35.43 seconds in the rarely-contested event, bettering the mark of 36.01 Joe Covino set back in 2000. He was first among five competitors in the race and won by 2.15 seconds over Antonio Francis of the Dare 2 Dream Track Club.

Kennedy's afternoon also included finishing fifth of 55 in the 60 meter dash, with times of 7.24 in the prelims and 7.25 in the finals. He was also part of the Falcons' 4x200 yard relay, which finished second to Dare 2 Dream in 1:34.94. That quartet included seniors Bryan Carton (Norwell/Norwell HS) and Derek Sit (Wellesley/Wellesley HS) and sophomore Steve Maffiolini (Southington, Conn./ Southington HS), in addition to Kennedy.

Carton had Bentley's other winning performance in the meet as he broke the tape in the 200 meters in 23.36 seconds, besting runner-up Matthew Owens of Regis by 0.27 seconds. He also placed sixth in the 400 invitational, finishing in 52.24 seconds. Maffiolini was the runner-up in the open 400, posting a 52.87.

Sophomore Anthony Charter (Hubbardston/Quabbin Reg. HS) also had a strong meet for the Falcons with a pair of second-place finishes. He set a new personal best in the long jump (21'8.25") and shared second in the triple with freshman teammate Connor Hichens (Sharon/Sharon HS), both clearing 42 feet, 10.25 inches.

Freshman Sean Nee (West Yarmouth/Dennis-Yarmouth Reg. HS) ran the invitational 1,000 in 2:37.26, a PR that placed him third of 14 in the race, and junior Brendon Colford (Epping, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) had an identical finish in the open 800, finishing in 2:02.60.

In that same race, sophomores Joey Carroll (West Kingstown, R.I./South Kingstown HS) and Christian Connolly (Kingston/Silver Lake Reg. HS) were fifth and sixth with times of 2:04.26 and 2:04.54, respectively.

Bentley also saw senior Sean Maguire (Essex, Vt./Essex JS) post an 8:41.40 in the invitational 3,000 to finish fifth of ten, and first among collegians. That ranked sixth on this year's Northeast-10 performance list.

The next meet for the Falcons is the Boston University Terrier Invitational on Saturday.
